Originally from the Gold Coast, but now based in Lake Norman, North Carolina, US high school product Kate Swartwout has signed for Western Carolina University of the Southern Conference and will commence play for the Catamounts in 2016.
A tall, versatile player, Swartwout is listed as a defender/midfielder for Western Carolina, but has also shown prowess up front throughout her youth career. Having come through the the US system, it will be interesting to see if and how Swartwout’s style of play differs from the other Australians in college this year. Swartwout will definitely benefit from being a local player; with Lake Norman being only 250km from Western Carolina, the coaching staff will have been able to watch her play in person on several occasions. This means the Catamounts’ coaching staff know exactly what to expect from Swartwout throughout a 90 minute performance, which should assist in the defender’s transition to the college game.
