2017 Week 2 Preview

What might have been a tough trip to the shores of Lake Michigan for Stanford actually turned into a cruise for Beattie Goad and the Cardinal, who demolished Wisconsin and Marquette by a combined score of 9-0. Now the #1 team in the coaches’ poll, Stanford travel to #8 Florida for what should be a far tougher contest, and hopefully a good test for Goad, who came off the bench for a pair of cameos last weekend. Stanford defeated Florida 1-0 at home last season, but travelling to Gainesville is another story entirely.

Murray State knocked off Marshall courtesy of two Harriet Withers goals last week, and the Racers continue to face a solid level of opposition in the opening few weeks of the season. This week, they travel to Alabama to face Troy, the former home of Australian defender Alex Huynh, before taking on Sun Belt powerhouse South Alabama. Both games, in particular the South Alabama game, should provide a challenge for a Racers side looking to stamp their authority on the world of mid-majors.

Priya Gakhar has had to wait a week longer than the remainder of the Aussies to get her chance, but Grambling State kick off their season this weekend against NAIA side Texas A&M-Texarkana before hosting New Mexico State in the opening two fixtures of their season. After playing just 11 games last season and securing just a single victory, soccer looks to be taken much more seriously at Grambling this season, with these two games forming the opening stages of a 17 game slate.

UCLA slaughtered both of their opposition last week with 5-1 wins over San Diego State and Long Beach State. About the only thing missing was a clean sheet, but Teagan Micah will have the chance to rectify that this weekend against Santa Clara and UC Santa Barbara. Santa Clara came within a couple of minutes of taking California to overtime last week and will certainly provide more of a test than last week’s opponents. However, that may just provide an opportunity for Micah to get more than the paltry two saves she was forced into in each game last week. UC Santa Barbara may not provide quite as stern a test as Santa Clara, but they do have wins over Idaho and San Jose State under their belt, so the Gauchos have shown a bit of form.

East Tennessee State demolished South Carolina State 8-0 in their opener, with Isabel Hodgson picking up an assist, but came thudding back to Earth with a 1-0 loss to Tennessee Tech. Things only get tougher for the Buccaneers this week with a game against SEC side Tennessee, who currently sit at 2-0 after wins over Navy and George Mason. Hodgson and East Tennessee State then face off against Davidson, who smashed Gardner-Webb 4-0 in their opener, but were promptly demolished 4-0 by Wake Forest in their second fixture. Nonetheless, these two games should provide a solid test for an East Tennessee State side looking to test themselves before looking to go one step further than last season and win a conference title.
