Spring 2021 Week 2 Preview

We’re still not yet at full tilt as teams slowly commence their seasons, but the number of games is growing week-by-week, offering more opportunities to catch the Aussies in action. This week sees the likes of Claudia Jenkins and Teresa Morrissey play their season openers, whilst there are chances for more college debuts as more teams kick off their campaigns.

Alabama State kick off their season this week against in-state rival Troy, with sophomore Sophie Bui hoping to make an impact and Grace Norbury hoping to make her collegiate debut. The Hornets are looking to work their way back up after a couple of seasons slightly off the pace since 2017’s SWAC championship, and a win over a highly-fancied Trojans outfit would be the ideal way to start the season.

Norbury’s fellow NPLW Victoria alumna Ashley Jordan also has a chance to make her college debut this week as San Francisco commence their season with a game against Pacific. The Dons finished 7th in the WCC last season, but this week’s opponents failed to pick up a single point in 9 games in 2019. However, the game between these two teams last season saw San Francisco require an 83rd minute equaliser and a 100th minute golden goal to win 3-2, so despite the apparent gulf in class between the two sides, things are never as easy as they seem. When Jordan does take to the pitch, be it this week or at some point hopefully in the near future, she will become the first Australian to take to the pitch for San Francisco since Price Keogh’s 8 appearances across the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

Reigning College Matildas Player of the Year, Claudia Jenkins kicks off her season this weekend alongside countrywoman Alyssa Van Heurck as La Salle get underway with a local derby against Villanova. Both of these teams finished in the top 100 of the RPI in 2019, and with local bragging rights on the line, expect both sides to go hammer and tong with the Explorers’ Aussie pairing right in the middle of things. However, Villanova aren’t without their own Australian presence, with associate head coach Daniel Clitnovici on the bench for the Wildcats.

Meanwhile, Jenkins’ biggest rival for College Matildas Goalkeeper of the Year and conference opponent, Rhode Island’s Teresa Morrissey gets her own season underway with a game against local rival Providence. Both of these sides are looking to improve on last season’s results, with Providence notching 8 wins in 2019 and Rhode Island just the four. Morrissey was a big part of the Rams’ improvement from a winless campaign in 2018 to last year’s four victories, and with the vast majority of the starting lineup returning, the Victorian goalkeeper will be looking to lead her team to success, starting with this game.

Finally, all College Matildas fans will be waiting with nervous anticipation for Grand Canyon’s team sheet for their home-and-away series against Arizona State this weekend. Sandra Hill was immense for the Lopes last week against Arizona before leaving the game due to injury, and there will no doubt be plenty of people hoping for a quick return for the dynamic wingback.
