All eyes will be on Prairie View A&M University this week as teams featuring Aussies fill the top two seeds of the SWAC Tournament. Grace Norbury, Sophie Bui, and the undefeated regular season champion Alabama State side will kick things off at the eye-watering hour of 1am on Friday morning (AEST) against Alcorn State as they look to march all the way through to the NCAA Tournament. Ashley Commens and Grambling State will play in the last game of the day at the far more respectable time of 8:30am, facing off against 7th seed Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Should they win, the semi-finals will be played the next day, whilst the final will be played at 2am on Monday morning, with all games streamed on the SWAC Digital Network.
Meanwhile, in the northeast of the country, the Atlantic 10’s regular season reaches its final round this week, but chaos has already ensued even before the first ball is kicked in anger. Alyssa Van Heurck and La Salle have had their game against Teresa Morrissey’s Rhode Island side cancelled due to a positive COVID-19 case within the Rhode Island program, denying the Explorers a shot at banking three points before they face Saint Joseph’s in their final game of the season. Further north, Hannah Peric and Massachusetts will have one last chance to secure victory prior to the four-team conference tournament as they host Fordham. What effect all of these results will have on the make-up of the tournament remains to be seen, and it is probably best at this stage to leave that to the bean-counters in the conference offices to calculate.
Moving to the Big East, Aussies will face off in a top of the table battle in the Midwest Division. Renee Pountney’s Creighton side will make the trip from Omaha to Indianapolis to face Claire Farrington and Butler. Whilst the Bluejays won’t be able to catch Butler as they sit two games behind the Bulldogs, they can ensure they secure a spot in the conference tournament ahead of Marquette and Xavier, who remain in contention but would be relying on other results to secure their spot.
Of course, current College Matildas aren’t the only ones in action this week. Alongside current Stanford midfielder Amy Sayer, former college players Beattie Goad, Dylan Holmes, Alexandra Huynh, and Aivi Luik are all part of the Matildas squad that will take on Germany and the Netherlands. Meanwhile, former UCLA midfielder Rachel Lowe and former Texas Tech forward Demi Koulizakis will face off as Sydney FC take on Canberra United in the W-League Grand Final on Sunday afternoon, making for an action-packed week of football.
