2021 Week 10 Wrap

It’s not often that we pick out one player as the undoubted star of the week, but it’s hard to go past Eliza Ammendolia’s efforts for Hawaii as the Rainbow Wahine picked up their first two wins of the season. The midfielder tallied three goals this week to jump to the top of the College Matildas goalscoring charts in the space of three days. Ammendolia played in excess of 80 minutes in both games, tallying the opener in a 2-1 win over UC Davis before adding a brace in a 4-0 demolition of Cal State Bakersfield. The victories may be too little, too late in terms of qualifying for the Big West conference tournament for Hawaii, but it was certainly pleasing to see the Rainbow Wahine hitting some form, particularly with Ammendolia playing an integral role in both victories.

Meanwhile, staying on the western side of the country, Amy Sayer and Stanford find themselves right back in the Pac-12 title hunt after a successful weekend hosting the two Arizona schools. With USC dropping points to both Washington and Washington State, the door was opened up for both Stanford and UCLA, with Stanford in particular taking full advantage. Sayer was instrumental in the 2-0 victory over Arizona State, sending in a pinpoint cross that was directed home with a peach of a diving header from Andrea Kitahata.

Madison McComasky continues to be a force for Incarnate Word this season, picking up an award for her efforts against this week. However, the senior was exceptional in both games as the Cardinals came away with a draw and win from their two games. The Sydneysider tested the Southeastern Louisiana goalkeeper three times in an overtime 1-1 draw, playing 96 minutes. Somehow, her performance against Nicholls State was even better, leading her team to a 2-0 win with an 86-minute effort that saw her performance rewarded with a Player of the Match selection.

Finally, there was reason for celebration for two Australians this week as both Kiarnie Latham and Greta Kraszula wrapped up regular season titles. Kraszula and VCU secured the Atlantic 10 outright title with a win over Davidson early in the weekend, whilst Latham’s UT-Martin side grabbed a share of the Ohio Valley Conference championship with a final day 1-0 win over Morehead State that saw them split the spoils with SIU Edwardsville. However, UT-Martin own the tiebreaker with SIU Edwardsville and will take the #1 seed into the Ohio Valley Conference tournament, delivering the team a double-bye as well as hosting rights for the semi-finals and final.
