It’s approaching crunch time for teams looking to secure conference tournament berths, with Hawaii, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Texas Tech all in solid positions. Meanwhile, Beattie Goad and Teagan Micah face off in the always highly-anticipated UCLA v Stanford matchup.
Eliza Ammendolia produced a performance to remember for Hawaii, finishing with a hat-trick with a difference against UC Irvine. Meanwhile, Teresa Morrissey was once again Rhode Island’s saviour, whilst Siena Senatore and Southeast Missouri State booked a postseason berth.
Defensive players are shining bright at the moment, with Sam Roff, Claudia Jenkins, and Teresa Morrissey flying high. Meanwhile, at the other end of the pitch, Demi Koulizakis will be looking to get Texas Tech’s attack firing again.
Claudia Jenkins and Teresa Morrissey continued to play starring roles for their respective teams between the sticks, whilst Tessa Calabria doubled her goals tally for the season. Meanwhile, Beattie Goad may not have been credited with a stat on the scoresheet, but was nonetheless crucial in two Stanford goals.
The regular season reached its midway point this season, but for many teams the real work has just begun. This includes Texas Tech, who had Demi Koulizakis to thank for a game-winner in a blockbuster against Oklahoma State. Elsewhere, Sam Roff notched a milestone of her own in a win over Merrimack.
(Image Credit: Stanford Athletics) Only two teams received first place votes in the Pac-12 preseason coaches’ poll, and those teams just happen to be the […]
Goals for Indianna Asimus are becoming a regular occurrence, whilst Rachel Lowe took advantage of an extended run on Sunday afternoon to make her case for extended playing time for UCLA.
Beattie Goad and Stanford will be looking for a more successful week after dropping a game to Pepperdine last week, whilst UCLA and Hawaii bring together no less than five Aussies, including a trio of W-League teammates.
It would be fair to say that this wasn’t the most electrifying week in College Matildas history. However, there were still a few solid performances, particularly from the goalkeepers, whilst Indianna Asimus’ goal for Wyoming was simply a delight to watch.
With Stanford and UCLA in the top 5 in the coaches’ poll, and Mississippi and Texas Tech receiving votes, there are plenty of Aussies playing for top teams at the moment in varying capacities. However, there are plenty of other places you can find Aussies performing well, including at Illinois, where Ashleigh Lefevre continues to cement her spot in the Fighting Illini’s starting eleven.
The stars kept shining this week as the season hit the 25% point, with Demi Koulizakis and Beattie Goad putting in impressive shifts. However, the undoubted top performer was Claudia Jenkins, whose career day led La Salle to victory on the road at Florida Gulf Coast.
With only a couple of weeks until conference play commences, it’s time for teams to start hitting their straps in non-conference action to prepare themselves for their league slate. Teagan Micah, Rachel Lowe, and UCLA will continue their high-level early schedule against Santa Clara, whilst Demi Koulizakis will hope that her Senior Night celebrations extend throughout the night as Texas Tech look to maintain their good form.
The Pac-12 Aussies flexed their national title credentials this week, with UCLA in particular coming up with a pair of massive wins. Meanwhile, down in the Lone Star State, Texas Tech were ruthless in smashing home 8 goals across two games, with Demi Koulizakis playing no small part in their wins.
One of the biggest events of the season takes place this week, with Aussie pair Rachel Lowe and Teagan Micah front and centre. Meanwhile, Teresa Morrissey and Claudia Jenkins will look to continue their solid form between the sticks, and are there more goals coming for Nicholls State’s Aussies?
A week of outstanding performances saw a pair of freshmen enjoy outstanding debuts, a sophomore pick up a first career goal, and a senior make a stunning comeback from injury with a goal as a number of Aussies got on the scoresheet during the opening weekend of the season.
Preseason is in the books and it’s time for the regular season to kick off. Over the next 12 weeks, over 330 teams across the US will be playing for their chance to compete for a national championship, with a couple of Aussies among the teams with the best chance to be holding the trophy aloft in San Jose in early December.
A seven-player group of forwards light on goalscoring returns but full of potential lines up in 2019, with Nicholls State’s senior trio of Tessa Calabria, Kristy Helmers, and Shauni Reid looking to improve the Colonels’ attack. Meanwhile, Demi Koulizakis will look to make an impact in her senior year after winning Texas Tech’s Most Improved Player in 2018.
A stacked midfield group featuring junior national representatives Aimee Medwin and Eliza Ammendolia, national champion Beattie Goad, and senior Matilda Rachel Lowe is set to provide plenty of excitement in 2019, with a number of players in position to make a significant impact on their teams. The continued improvement of Alyssa Van Heurck is one storyline to keep an eye on, with the sophomore having made the move from defence into a more attacking role in 2018.
Eight Australian defenders will take to the pitch this season, with a number of intriguing storylines emerging. The return of Siena Senatore after two years away is certainly one to follow, whilst freshman duo Abi Jordan and Teal Kilbride could form a centre-back pairing at UMBC from day one.
Once the domain of Wyoming legend Georgia Rowntree, the Australian goalkeeping stocks in NCAA Division I are now four deep as freshman Teresa Morrissey joins Claudia Jenkins, Teagan Micah, and Grace Watson Carr in the US, with all four either the incumbent starter or a reasonable chance of securing the berth.
Australians in NCAA Division I women’s soccer scored 22 goals and tallied 26 assists in 2018. However, 11 of those goals and 16 of those assists came via players who will not be returning to college in 2019, either due to graduation or other reasons. Despite a comparative lack of attacking output among the returning players, there are a number of players who are yet to regularly add their names to the scoresheet that could yet have breakout seasons and provide memorable moments this year. College Matildas takes a look at four players and one duo that could all make significant impacts for their teams in 2019.

It’s time for the big one – the NCAA Tournament – and two teams featuring Aussies are among the favourites as Stanford and UCLA look to make return trips to the College Cup.
A whirlwind weekend to end the regular season has left us with four teams and five Australians securing conference championships, with a raft of other teams having either locked up an at-large bid or still very much in the mix. However, the performance of the week came in a game that saw one Aussie help another to a title as Teagan Micah’s performance in goal helped UCLA to a win over USC that delivered Beattie Goad and Stanford an outright Pac-12 championship with a game to spare.
15 teams featuring Australians remain standing heading into the final week of the regular season, and all have a shot of reaching the NCAA Tournament. How close each team is varies wildly, but nonetheless it looks set to be a thriller of a week.
The number of Aussies left standing can only go down from here, but it was a fairly solid week of conference tournament play with a number of teams seeing their way through to next week. However, the news of the weekend was Wyoming clinching a share of the Mountain West Conference regular season title with a final day win over Colorado State.
21 teams featuring Aussies remain in the mix for the NCAA Tournament, and with six of those teams kicking off conference tournaments this week, it’s certainly crunch time for a number of players. Meanwhile, the thrilling fight for conference tournament spots in the Northeast Conference continues with Fairleigh Dickinson and Saint Francis right in the mix coming into the final matchday.
Extended time on the pitch has not been forthcoming for Beattie Goad recently, but the Stanford junior took full advantage of her chance to star for the Cardinal as the nation’s top team continued their march towards back-to-back titles. Elsewhere, Emma Heckenberg continued to exhibit her talent at dead ball situations to help Drexel grab a vital win.
We’re getting right down to crunch time now, with plenty of Aussies either fighting to secure a conference tournament berth or simply work themselves back into the hunt. The biggest matchup of the week is in a league with no postseason tournament though as Colorado take on Stanford with both teams eyeing the league crown.
Seniors stepped up when it mattered most as Annika Clayton put Wyoming on her back and Isabel Hodgson scored on her own Senior Night. Claudia Jenkins and Teagan Micah continued their good form between the sticks, whilst Kristy Helmers tallied her second goal of the season.
Sandra Hill and Grand Canyon need wins to keep pace with the leaders in the WAC, but Sarah Clark and Chicago State stand in their way and will be hungry for a first win of 2018. Elsewhere, Sam Roff and Isabel Hodgson look to maintain positions among the top of their respective leagues, whilst Emma Heckenberg faces both Jodie Burchell and Monique Iannella in yet more CAA Aussie v Aussie affairs.
Jessie Gentle was anything but this week as she put the Wyoming side on her back to be involved in three of her team’s four goals this weekend to keep the Cowgirls in a solid position in the Mountain West Conference. Elsewhere, Claudia Jenkins and Alyssa Van Heurck helped La Salle to a pair of bounce-back wins, whilst Jodie Burchell and Kate Swartwout picked up their first collegiate goals.
As conference play ramps up, a number of teams featuring Aussies find themselves in intriguing positions heading into crunch time. Meanwhile, Lorena Bugden and Monique Iannella face off in a game that could have serious implications in the Colonial Athletic Association.
It might be time to start calling Caitlin Pickett ‘Cardiac Caitlin’ as the Wyoming freshman came up with the second overtime winner of her first season of college soccer, whilst the return of Teagan Micah to the UCLA lineup following a stint on the sidelines with concussion was a welcome sight for Bruins and Aussie fans alike.
Beattie Goad. Teagan Micah. Stanford. UCLA. Last time this matchup occurred, it was in Orlando and culminated in one of the greatest College Cup games in history, with Goad and Stanford taking final honours in a 3-2 victory. This time, the Cardinal defend their home patch, with Micah and UCLA out for redemption. Back on the east coast, a plethora of Aussie v Aussie matchups are set to shake up conference title races even at this early stage.
Assists were the theme of the weekend, as Monique Iannella tied the Hofstra school record for a single game and several other Aussies teed up teammates. However, that didn’t stop a couple of players from tallying goals, and there was also a first career appearance for Tenille Harberger.
Aussies face each other on both sides of the country this week as Kiri Dale takes on Sandra Hill and Lauren Featherstone in a tournament in Honolulu, whilst Jodie Burchell faces Monique Iannella and Lorena Bugden in Towson’s first two conference games. Elsewhere, Sam Roff and the Fairleigh Dickinson defence look to keep things tight at the back against a Mount St. Mary’s team that has had enough troubles scoring goals as it is.
Postponements and cancellations may have thrown a spanner in the works slightly as Hurricane Florence wreaked havoc on the US Southeast, but in other parts of the country, a few Aussies popped up with solid performances to drive their teams to victory, including Monique Iannella and Annika Clayton.
Yet another Aussie v Aussie affair highlights this week, with Sam Roff and Fairleigh Dickinson face La Salle’s Australian pairing of Claudia Jenkins and Alyssa Van Heurck. Elsewhere, Sandra Hill continues her comeback for Grand Canyon and Demi Koulizakis looks to build on last week’s excellent outing against Florida International.
Demi Koulizakis’ peach of a goal to open her college account was one of the highlights of the week, whilst La Salle goalkeeper Claudia Jenkins was again in brick wall-like form to set a new career high for saves in the Explorers’ 2-2 draw with Rutgers.
Sam Roff and Monique Iannella will face off in an All-Aussie matchup as part of a big week as teams look to hit form just in time for the rapidly approaching conference season.
One of the biggest weekends for Australians in college in recent memory transpired this week, with four players tallying goals, another six registering assists, and a number of others putting in solid efforts to round out what was a simply mesmerising set of performances across the board.
Title contenders Stanford and UCLA head on the road for some early season tests, with Beattie Goad and Teagan Micah looking to maintain their outstanding early season form. Elsewhere, Sam Roff and Fairleigh Dickinson will be looking to get back to winning ways, whilst Monique Iannella and Hofstra are hoping that a win comes a little more easily than in last week’s overtime thriller against Boston University.
There were outstanding performances all over the field from Aussies this weekend, from Teagan Micah between the sticks and Monique Iannella in defence to Beattie Goad in a more advanced role. Iannella in particular was one to watch, providing Hofstra fans with a moment to remember in the dying seconds of regulation time in their win over Boston University.
With a number of Aussies coming up with match-winning performances last week, there are plenty of teams looking to keep perfect records alive or build on momentum generated from an upset result. La Salle and Wyoming in particular will once again be looking for their Aussies to fire after outstanding starts to the season.
A number of Aussies came up with some utterly clutch plays to help get their teams over the line, with the performances of goalkeepers Teagan Micah and Claudia Jenkins a highlight. But it was Annika Clayton coming up trumps at the other end, banging in two goals to round out a stunning comeback win in Wyoming’s opener against South Dakota.
It looked as if the numbers may be lacking slightly this season, but a late flurry of signings sees 32 Aussies start their 2018 Division I season this weekend, with 12 of those a chance to make their debut this week. We also see a couple of Aussie v Aussie matchups, including one with a difference.
30 players will represent Australia in NCAA Division I women’s soccer this season, including 2017 national champion Beattie Goad at Stanford and national runner-up Teagan Micah at UCLA. However, with players such as Georgia Rowntree, Alisha Bass, Harriet Withers, Nyomi Devine, Emily Hulbert, and Paige Hayward having now graduated, it is almost a new era for College Matildas.
34 Australians featured on rosters of NCAA Division I programs this season, with 30 of those getting onto the pitch at some point. Some were […]
We started the NCAA Tournament with nine Australians across seven teams in contention for the national championship. The majority fell by the wayside, but spectacularly, […]
Seven teams featuring nine Aussies will form part of the 64-team NCAA Tournament. Two teams – Stanford and UCLA – are among the teams expected to make deep runs in the tournament, whilst others are looking to write a Cinderella story.
Six conference championship games involving Australians made for an exciting Sunday as teams looked to punch their tickets to the NCAA Tournament. Elsewhere, Paige Hayward finally secured the career scoring record for Texas Southern.
Conference tournaments are the focus this week, with a number of Aussie-laden teams picking up high seeds and making themselves favourites to progress and reach the NCAA Tournament, particularly in the Colonial Athletic Association and Northeast Conference.
With this week seeing some conferences starting tournaments and others still in regular season play, a number of exciting scenarios played out across the country, whilst one legend’s career finished on a high with a two-goal effort in her swansong.
Things are coming right down to the wire in the SWAC, with both Priya Gakhar and Paige Hayward right in the mix as the conference comes down to its final matchday. The undoubted match of the week is also the match of the regular season as Beattie Goad and Stanford travel south to face Teagan Micah and UCLA.
It was a week for regular season crowns, as Hofstra and Murray State each secured conference titles. The news wasn’t so good for conference tournament-chasing Wyoming results-wise, but a number of Aussies still had moments to be proud of.
It’s time for what is always one of the most intriguing Aussie v Aussie games of the season – Kate Swartwout and Western Carolina v Isabel Hodgson and East Tennessee State in a local derby. However, that is far from being the only intriguing storyline of the week, with playoff pushes and title races coming right down to the wire.
Once again, it was a week of assists for the Aussies, with a number of players teeing up teammates for goals. However, the top performance of the week belonged to Paige Hayward, who rewrote the Texas Southern record books with some outstanding play.
As we move into the final few weeks of the regular season, teams are scrambling for position in their respective conferences, and the teams featuring Aussies are no exception. Hofstra and Murray State attempt to continue their run towards regular season titles, whilst Wyoming endeavour to move back into the title race in a tight Mountain West Conference.
Scoring goals has been a theme throughout the season for the Australians in college this season, but this week was all about assists, as four players combined for five assists. There was one goal for Alisha Bass though, and one player set a little-known NCAA Division I all-time record.
UCLA and Stanford head in completely opposite directions geographically as the Pac-12 pair continue to keep pace with each other, whilst the Aussie duo at Hofstra look to remain atop the Colonial Athletic Association standings. The story is the same for the Australian pair at Murray State, who face an Aussie assistant coach against Eastern Kentucky in a clash of the titans in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Harriet Withers continues her charge to becoming one of Murray State’s all-time great players, whilst Emily Hulbert returned from injury and Georgia Rowntree was an absolute saviour for Wyoming.
It’s the first week of the second half of the regular season, but it also appears to be the Week of the Aussie v Aussie Matchup, with at least two cracking games littered with Australians set to come this week. Elsewhere, Ellie Papalexiou continues to make her return from serious injury for Pacific.
In a week that was perhaps a little light on standout performances, Harriet Withers more than made up for it with a record-setting outing against Jacksonville State. The players down the back were once again on point though, with Georgia Rowntree, Monique Iannella, and Nyomi Devine enjoying solid outings.
Revenge may be a dish best served 10 months later for Isabel Hodgson and East Tennessee State, whilst the Pac-12 battle for national supremacy between UCLA and Stanford continues to simmer as both teams commence conference play this week. SWAC play also commences for our Aussies this week, with both Priya Gakhar and Paige Hayward hungry for goals.
This week wasn’t exactly one big highlight reel for the Aussies, but there were still a number of excellent performances, whilst one player also made her comeback after significant time out of the game.
Week 5 really represents a leap into the middle portion of the 12 week college regular season. The first third of the campaign is in the book, and slowly but surely conference play is beginning to ramp up, with a couple of Aussies starting their league campaigns this week.
Two-goal performances were the order of the week among the Aussies, as Harriet Withers and Alisha Bass each notched braces to lead their teams to wins. Jemma House also picked up her first college goal, and is there a new defensive star emerging at Hofstra?
The California-based Pac-12 Aussies are flying right now, but nothing is certain and both teams will have to be at their best to remain at the pointy end of the coaches’ poll. Meanwhile, Paige Hayward and Texas Southern return after an enforced break due to Hurricane Harvey, and Sam Roff looks to marshal the Fairleigh Dickinson defence against a Buffalo team that banged home five goals last weekend.
It was certainly a great weekend for the goalkeepers, with both Teagan Micah and Georgia Rowntree pulling out exceptional performances. However, Emily Hulbert was even better in midfield for Hofstra, leading her team to a demolition of Eastern Washington. Elsewhere, we saw yet another freshman make their debut in the form of Olivia Ellis.
Three Pac-12 teams that feature Aussies are in the top 25, and all will seek to maintain their position with a pair of games this week. Meanwhile, the Louisiana-based Aussies will face each other, and Claire Urquhart seeks to keep a grip on a starting spot for Albany.
The Paige Hayward v Harriet Withers showdown for top goalscorer is officially on for a second year running as both scored three goals in an entertaining weekend for the Aussies.
Week 1 is done and dusted, and whilst a few teams showed us something in the opening games, the second week of the season stands to offer us a chance to look deeper at some teams that are trying to establish championship credentials, either at a conference or national level.
It was certainly an eventful opening weekend for the Aussies in NCAA Division I. We saw a couple of players pop up unexpectedly, but certain others did exactly what we know them best for – dominating at the attacking end of the field. At the back, certain experienced players kept their opposition in check to give their teams a chance at victory.
