The Big East reigned supreme among the Aussies this week. Three of the conference’s Aussies made noteworthy contributions to their teams’ performances, with Renée Pountney and Katie Godden notching career milestones in the process.
Renée Pountney has made a considerable leap this season, making her first career start and already vastly outstripping her efforts from the spring campaign. However, there was still one thing missing from the former Newcastle Jet’s résumé: a collegiate goal. However, that all changed as Creighton took on South Dakota State this week. Fresh off a 0-0 draw with South Dakota, the Bluejays clearly saved their goals for the second game of the weekend, winning 3-0 as Pountney tallied Creighton’s second of the game. Charging forward on the counter-attack, Pountney out-sprinted a Jackrabbits defender to chase down a through-ball and place it across the goalkeeper and into the side-netting to all but wrap up the three points with 16 minutes to play. Having played just four games in spring, Pountney has now played six this season and made the first two starts of her career as her progression continues at a rapid rate.
Staying in the Big East, Claire Farrington continues to be a rock at the back for Butler as the Bulldogs maintain their solid start to the season. Taking on IUPUI and Utah this week, Butler had the chance to move to 4-1, and promptly did just that. Facing local rivals IUPUI, the Bulldogs kept a clean sheet, with Farrington playing 75 minutes in a 1-0 win as Butler held their opponents to just five shots whilst rattling off 32 of their own. Utah proved a tougher battle as Butler were held to just 12 shots, but once again Farrington and the Bulldogs defence shut down their opponents, keeping the Utes to just 6 shots in a 2-1 win as they picked up a third non-conference victory over a Power 5 opponent.
Meanwhile, conference rival DePaul took on Milwaukee and Michigan this week in games that saw Katie Godden make her first career starts. Having come off the bench in three previous fixtures, the freshman was elevated to the starting lineup against Milwaukee, and played 71 minutes in a 1-0 defeat to the Panthers, rattling off two shots. That performance earned Godden another start, and again the forward played 71 minutes, but unfortunately the result was again a 1-0 defeat for the Blue Demons. However, things appear to be boding well for the former Arsenal Academy player.
Moving away from the Big East and to the Ohio Valley Conference, Kiarnie Latham only saw brief playing time this week, but the sophomore only needed limited minutes to make an impact against North Alabama. The former Emerging Jet tallied an assist just 34 seconds after coming onto the pitch late in the first half, helping Tennessee-Martin to a 3-0 halftime lead. Latham would go on to play 23 minutes in the 4-1 win, the most playing time the sophomore has received in any one game this season. Hopefully, the versatile defender’s impact against North Alabama can lead to more playing time in the future after starting in 6 of 11 games in the spring campaign.
