Goals have been in short supply for the College Matildas this season, but this week saw two players find the back of the net and another go desperately close to tallying one on her college debut.
It’s been a long time coming for Amy Sayer, but the Stanford sophomore finally tucked home her first college goal as the Cardinal romped to a 3-0 win over Loyola Marymount. In the dying seconds of the first half, Stanford went the length of the pitch in mere seconds, with Sayer creating the opportunity from midfield before making the late run into the box to put her team up 2-0 heading into the break. The goal had been a long time coming for Sayer, for whom hitting the bar had almost become a theme in amongst what has been an outstanding first two seasons to this point for the Matildas midfielder. Now, with that first goal finally under her belt, hopefully this weekend can be the catalyst for more goals for the former Sydney FC star.
Continuing on the theme of first goals, Indianna Asimus had scored plenty for Wyoming but this week saw the Orana Spurs junior tally her first for Illinois State since transferring prior to this season. Making her first start for the Redbirds, Asimus scored what would turn out to be the game-winner in a six-goal thriller against Northern Illinois, tallying the strike to put Illinois State up 3-2 in the 68th minute. The Redbirds would add a fourth goal in the 83rd minute to finish with a 4-2 victory and move to 2-6 for the season.
From one end of the pitch to the other, Caitlin Le Roux has started to come into her own at Louisiana Tech, starting both games for the Lady Techsters this week after coming off the bench in the majority of games to this point. The South Australian freshman hadn’t played more than 62 minutes in any one game before this weekend, but played 80 minutes in a 4-0 win over Sam Houston State and 68 minutes in a 2-1 defeat of Little Rock to further embed herself in a Louisiana Tech lineup that has posted a 4-3-1 record to this point. Le Roux also tallied a shot just for good measure as she looks to notch a first collegiate goal.
Just up the road, Louisiana-Monroe took on Alcorn State in a game that saw both Brianna and Siobhan Edwards make their debut for the Warhawks during a 7-0 demolition. Brianna earned family bragging rights as the first of the pair to take to the pitch in the 72nd minute, but Siobhan subbed in just a minute later, hitting the woodwork with a shot just 90 seconds after coming on. The battle for more minutes looks set to be white-hot going forward, particularly with the Warhawks sitting at an impressive 7-0 record and showing good form.
As one of the lowest-rated conferences in NCAA Division I, few people would give a SWAC team a chance against a Conference USA side, particularly when that SWAC team had lost to the same Conference USA side 8-1 just seven months ago. However, nobody told Alabama State as they marched into Birmingham to face UAB. Grace Norbury saw 81 minutes of playing time as the Hornets scrapped and clung on by their fingernails to earn a famous 0-0 draw, with Spanish goalkeeper Sheila Sanchez coming up with TWENTY saves in the win. The Hornets would then face NAIA side Faulkner at home later in the week, with Norbury tallying five of the Hornets’ 41 shots in a game that finished 2-2 as Faulkner managed 20 shots of their own as the two attacks showed their potency throughout the 110 minutes.
