It’s been a tough season for Hawaii, who have garnered just three draws from their 12 games, but Eliza Ammendolia found her way onto the scoring summary for the second time this season with another assist. The Rainbow Wahine fell 4-1 to UC Irvine, with Ammendolia’s scuffed shot from a cross turning into a pass that teammate Nicole Ando somehow managed to sneak inside the post for a first career goal. The assist took Ammendolia’s season to tally to two and her career tally to six alongside the lone goal she scored in 2019.
Amy Sayer also added to her assist tally as Stanford drew 2-2 with Colorado, but not before taking a 2-0 lead and letting the Buffaloes back into the contest in the second half. In a 45-minute effort, the interplay with goalscorer Maya Doms for the assist on the opening goal was Sayer’s shining moment of the game as the sophomore received a pass from Doms before returning the favour at the perfect moment for the junior to slot home the opener. Now sitting five points back from league leaders USC, a conference title is looking less likely for the Cardinal at this stage than it did prior to the weekend, but the team from Palo Alto still sits on the right side of the tournament bubble at this stage.
There were also some encouraging signs for players who haven’t received as much publicity this season. San Francisco sophomore Ashley Jordan had played just 35 minutes this season after making her debut against Oregon in August, but came off the bench to play 53 minutes against defending national champions Santa Clara this week. Although the Dons went down 2-0, seeing Jordan on the pitch for an extended period was certainly a welcome sight.
This week also saw the return of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Molly Arens, who had not been sighted on the pitch since being forced off early against UTRGV in the final weekend of August. However, the Novocastrian slotted straight back into the starting lineup for the Islanders for a pair of games against Northwestern State and McNeese State. Whilst Texas A&M-Corpus Christi couldn’t get the chocolates in a 2-0 loss to Northwestern State, they rebounded with a 3-2 win over McNeese State later in the weekend. Arens finished the weekend playing 56 minutes against Northwestern State and 50 minutes against McNeese State, tallying a shot in each contest.
