2022 Week 2 Wrap

The goals and assists continue to flow for the Aussies in NCAA Division I, with six players having now found the back of the net in the first two weeks. Meanwhile, Molly Arens continued to tee up teammates and Caitlin Le Roux notched a first assist of her career.

However, we kick things off at Seton Hall where we saw Grace and Sarah Mitchell on the pitch together for the first time at the collegiate level. Whilst Sarah had seen playing time during Week 1, the Pirates’ match against NJIT not only saw Sarah move into the starting lineup for the first time but also saw Grace make her debut and eventually play 65 minutes in the 0-0 draw. The duo would also see significant time as Seton Hall picked up their second win of the season, defeating Saint Joseph’s 2-0. Grace played 59 minutes, whilst Sarah saw 33 minutes as the pair came off the bench to play a role in the victory and look increasingly at home in South Orange.

Having scored in Stanford’s opener, Amy Sayer returned to scoring form with a brace in the Cardinal’s 5-1 win over UC Santa Barbara. Having played just 22 minutes earlier in the week against San Francisco, Sayer came off the bench just 17 minutes into the contest and needed only three more to slot home the opener. The junior needed only nine more minutes to find a second, heading home to put Stanford up 2-0 inside half an hour as they rolled to victory.

Eliza Ammendolia was also amongst the goals this week, scoring the opener as Hawai’i defeated Seattle 2-1. Having had her initial shot blocked, Ammendolia picked up the rebound and fired home from just inside the area. Ammendolia continued to look dangerous all weekend, finishing with four shots in the win over Seattle before firing off three more in 77 minutes as the Wahine defeated Nicholls State 1-0.

Courtney Butlion scored her first NCAA Division I goal against Towson last week, and made it two in as many games as La Salle knocked off Saint Francis 3-0 to open up Week 2. Once again providing an impact off the bench, Butlion turned the ball home from close range in the 74th minute to put La Salle up 2-0 as they dominated the contest but had failed to put Saint Francis away until that point. The Western Australian was dangerous once more against James Madison later in the week, finishing with three shots on target but La Salle fell to a 2-0 defeat despite outshooting the Dukes 15-5.

Molly Arens has been instrumental for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and little changed this week as the Novocastrian notched another pair of assists to help the Islanders to a 3-1 record through two weeks. Although things didn’t quite go to plan in a 2-1 loss to Texas State, the Islanders rebounded spectacularly against Prairie View A&M. Arens required just 42 minutes on the pitch to notch her two assists as most of the starters earned a significant early mark in a dominant 8-1 win that broke the Islanders’ record for most goals in a game. Arens has now notched five assists in just four games this season to lead NCAA Division I in total assists and sit third for assists per game.

Meanwhile, Caitlin Le Roux tallied the very first assist of her career as the South Australian took advantage of her elevation to the starting lineup for Louisiana Tech. Having come off the bench in the team’s first two games of the season, Le Roux started against Abilene Christian and provided the cross for the only goal of the game as Louisiana Tech secured a 1-0 win. Having played 67 minutes against Abilene Christian, Le Roux reprised her role against Louisiana and played 71 minutes in a 0-0 draw that moved Louisiana Tech to 2-1-1.

Finally, we head to Montgomery, Alabama where Madison Chambers looked highly dangerous during Alabama State’s 0-0 draw with Presbyterian. Coming off the bench, the Tasmanian fired off four shots in just 43 minutes to provide a real attacking threat throughout her time on the pitch. Whilst Chambers’ first season with the Hornets may have been highly interrupted, hopefully a performance like this can be a precursor to a far more successful sophomore year.
