As the season edges ever closer to crunch time, it was a week for teams to secure results that helped them stay in contention for conference tournament berths or even regular season titles. However, even those on the wrong side of the results showed their class as demonstrated by one player in particular.
Results-wise, it wasn’t the week that DePaul were hoping for as the Blue Demons fell to a pair of 2-1 defeats. However, for Katie Godden, it was a week that saw the sophomore return to scoring form as her season tally moved to four. With DePaul pushing for a goal in an attempt to arrest a 2-0 deficit against Providence, it was Godden who reacted fastest as the Providence goalkeeper spilled a free kick in the 89th minute, giving the Blue Demons faint hope in a game that would eventually end in a 2-1 defeat.
Godden’s second goal of the weekend against Claire Farrington’s Butler side would be a far more clinical finish, though. A ball into the box was allowed to drop, and Godden read the ricochet off a pair of legs perfectly to lash the ball home and tie the game just before the hour mark. However, Butler would respond with the game-winner in the 67th minute, giving Farrington and Butler the win in this Aussie v Aussie matchup.
VCU needed a win over Dayton to remain in the hunt for a conference regular season crown, and Greta Kraszula was instrumental in securing that victory as the Rams notched a 2-1 result to move within four points of the conference lead. Not only did Kraszula play the full 90 minutes for the ninth consecutive occasion, her pinpoint pass opened up the opportunity for Kanna Matsuhisa to bury the winner 10 minutes from time. The win also improved VCU’s NCAA Tournament hopes as their RPI ranking now sits at 42 whilst they also have a draw against Virginia and a win over Pittsburgh as significant results.
Two weeks ago, Lua Suero had yet to make her NCAA Division I debut, but the Kent State freshman appears to have cemented herself in the starting lineup with another two solid outings in a productive weekend for the Golden Flashes. The Queenslander played 43 minutes as Kent State rolled to a 4-2 win over Eastern Michigan and increased her minutes further in a draw with Miami University later in the week. In a game that saw the teams combine for just seven shots on target, one of Kent State’s two of those shots was enough to secure a point as Suero played 68 minutes in what was another encouraging showing.
Meanwhile, Grace Norbury continues to play an instrumental role for Alabama State, helping the Hornets to four points from a possible six this weekend. The midfielder played the full 90 minutes on both occasions as Alabama State drew with league-leading Grambling State before an efficient shooting day saw the team from Montgomery pick up a 3-0 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Hornets now sit three points off the league lead in fifth position, but have one or even two games in hand over three of the four teams above them. Madison Chambers also had an impact off the bench, playing just over half an hour on each occasion as Alabama State continues to be a happy hunting ground for Aussies, as it has been for the last decade.
