It was certainly a week for the South Australians at the attacking end of the pitch as both Abbey Burns and Lara Kirkby helped their teams to a share of the points. Meanwhile, Eliza Ammendolia was back to her worldie-scoring best for Hawaii.
UAB conceded the opener to Florida Atlantic after just 17 seconds of play, but if there’s a positive to take from conceding that early, it’s that you have 89 minutes to find an equaliser. However, with both teams’ shot counts barely ticking over, chances were few and far between in the first half. However, Abbey Burns changed the complexion of the game in the 55th minute. A smart ball found the South Australian in acres of space on the edge of the area, leaving Burns with plenty of time to pick her spot, which she did with aplomb, slotting the ball past the outstretched hand of the Florida Atlantic goalkeeper to tie things up at 1-1. Despite being outshot 7-1 in the second half, UAB goalkeeper Anika Toth stood tall to ensure Burns’ goal would secure a share of the points, their third draw in as many conference games.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime against UC San Diego, Hawaii needed somebody to step up in the second half, and Eliza Ammendolia did just that, leading the comeback charge as the Wahine came away with a 4-2 win. A trademark strike from well outside the area tied things up in the 52nd minute, before the Griffith product played in Amber Gilbert with a pinpoint through ball which was promptly nestled into the far corner for a 2-1 lead. Hawaii would score two more goals in the next ten minutes before UC San Diego managed a consolation with just four minutes remaining. Despite losing to UC Irvine in their second game of the week, Hawaii remain perched atop the Big West, although the majority of the teams chasing them do have a game in hand.
Lara Kirkby and Maine came into their home game against Annie Grove and UMBC with an undefeated record, but it was the visiting Retrievers who took a 2-0 advantage into the halftime break after outshooting the Black Bears 5-1 in the opening 45 minutes. However, 12 minutes after halftime, Maine earned a free kick and it was Kirkby’s pinpoint delivery that found the head of Doireann Fahey to halve the deficit. Maine continued to apply pressure, but the game-tying goal came not from open play, but an Olimpico eight minutes from time. The Black Bears would have opportunities to find a winner, but in the end, the teams would have to settle for a share of the points. However, with teams dropping points all over the America East conference, Maine sit a point off the pace but with a game in hand. UMBC sit equal bottom on two points, but it is a congested table and they will certainly take confidence from this performance. Both Aussies played the full 90 minutes, which certainly made our trip to Orono all the more worth it.
