A win over North Texas would guarantee UAB’s passage through to the American Conference tournament, and captain Abbey Burns ensured the Blazers would get the result they needed with a masterful performance in a 3-2 win. The South Australian posted an assist on the game’s opening goal in the 16th minute before scoring just prior to the hour mark to put the Blazers up 2-0. A second assist followed in the 78th minute to give UAB a 3-0 lead, and despite two late goals from North Texas, the Blazers held on for a win that extended their season into the conference tournament. Unfortunately, that tournament run ended as quickly as it began as the Blazers fell 2-1 to UTSA in the opening round, a game in which Burns played the full 90 minutes.
A sensational run of form saw Burns post five assists in UAB’s final six games, and finishes her campaign just one behind Isabella Chidiac for the most among all Aussies with eight.
Harvard’s season came to an end with a defeat to Columbia, but nonetheless there was a personal milestone for sophomore defender Erin Gordon. With her team trailing 2-0 heading into the final couple of minutes, a goalmouth scramble saw the ball fall to the Sydneysider, who managed to get the last touch for a first career goal and give Harvard the slenderest of chances in the final 90 seconds. Although the Crimson couldn’t find an equaliser that may have kept their season alive pending tiebreakers, the moment itself remains a career highlight for a player who has been a crucial part of Harvard’s squad for the past two campaigns.
More awards news filtered in this week, including possibly the most unsurprising news of the campaign. Mere days after helping Denver to a share of the Summit League regular season crown, Isabella Chidiac was named to the All-Conference First Team after posting a remarkable nine assists as well as one goal. It caps a meteoric rise for a player who had not posted a single stat in her three years with the Pioneers prior to 2025. The midfielder will now set her sights on leading her team to a conference tournament championship and a spot in the NCAA Tournament, with their postseason campaign commencing next week after securing an opening weekend bye.
Sarah Birchall was also honoured after an outstanding opening campaign, earning a spot in the Big South All-Freshman team. Birchall featured in 15 games in 2025, starting the last 12 of those appearances to firmly establish herself as a major part of the Runnin’ Bulldogs lineup. The Queenslander averaged just shy of 60 minutes of playing time per game, playing the full 90 minutes on three occasions, and also tacked on seven shots to provide a threat at the attacking end. Although the season didn’t end the way Gardner-Webb wanted, with a 3-0 defeat to High Point in the Big South tournament opening round, Birchall’s honour bodes well for the future. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also secured All-Conference nominations for senior goaikeeper Savannah Dixon and senior defender Camila Lezcano, and Birchall will play a large part in covering for those players’ departures next season.
