2025 Week 8 Preview

Lilly Bailey and Hofstra may be undefeated through three games of league play in the Coastal, but with all three results being draws, the Pride are in danger of slipping off the pace if they don’t grab a couple of wins this week. However, with Bailey between the sticks, they are always in with a chance, particularly as they play two teams just behind them on the table. Hofstra start their weekend at home against a Northeastern side that has struggled in recent seasons, and has posted just a single win alongside four draws in 10 games to this point. The Huskies have managed just eight goals this season, and only one in three conference games.

Margaux Chauvet and Purdue sit 2-3 in Big Ten play, but are arguably a superior team to what their record suggests as they head into a massive rivalry matchup with Indiana. Not only is this the biggest match on Purdue’s schedule every season, but the Boilermakers will also host the opening rounds of the Big Ten tournament this year, so qualifying for the ten-team event is absolutely paramount. Indiana are currently winless in league play and have scored just four goals in their five games, so regardless of the rivalry stakes, this is one game where Purdue absolutely must secure the three points. On the Aussie front, Chauvet is currently the minutes leader among all Australians in NCAA Division I women’s soccer, so expect the former Sydney FC player to make life difficult for a Hoosiers attack that has already had enough trouble finding the back of the net this conference season.

We may be just two games into the seven-game Ivy League schedule, but only Kate Ryan’s Dartmouth and Columbia remain undefeated in league play, and the pair face off this week in a game that could either see Columbia break away from the pack or, if Dartmouth win, tighten things right up. If the Big Green are to win this one, it is likely to be built on the back of a defence that has conceded just six goals in nine games, a full three goals better than any team in the Ivy League and vastly better than the 13 that Columbia have conceded in their ten games. However, Dartmouth have also been reasonably reliable in front of goal, posting 17 goals in their NCAA Division I games as well as banging home six goals against NCAA Division III side Brandeis in midweek. Columbia may be the side two points clear after Dartmouth drew with Penn last week, but with Ryan keeping things locked down at the back and the attack humming, the Big Green may just be favoured, particularly at home.

Meanwhile, Ryan’s fellow Ivy League star defender, Harvard’s Erin Gordon, will take on Cornell in their only game of the week. Both the Crimson and Big Red currently sit 1-1 in league play, with Harvard knocking off Princeton 2-0 after a first-up loss to Dartmouth. Meanwhile, Cornell fell to early leaders Columbia before handing Yale their second loss in as many games. Whilst these teams were tipped to finish at opposite ends of the Ivy League, with Harvard picking up a first-place vote and Cornell predicted to finish last, early results have already demonstrated that this league could go any way. Just like Ryan, Gordon is a crucial member of her team’s defence, with Harvard having conceded a solid 11 goals in 9 games to this point, coincidentally the exact same number that they have scored.
