Once again it was a week with few games and fewer Aussies, but a couple of players did shine through. It was a good thing too, as only five Australians actually managed to take to the pitch this week, leaving a small number to steal all the focus.
Massachusetts freshman Hannah Peric was undoubtedly the star of the show this weekend, putting in an outstanding shift in her first collegiate outing. Having sat through two weeks and four cancelled games, Peric finally got her chance at the fifth attempt as Massachusetts took on St. John’s in New York. Eventually, only a 66th minute penalty could split the sides as the Minutewomen fell 1-0. Peric played the full 90 minutes for UMass in what was hopefully a sign of things to come in an assured performance against a St. John’s side already showing vast improvement from last year’s unexpected 5-win campaign.
Amy Sayer continued to form an integral part of the Stanford midfield, but the Cardinal fell to a pair of unexpected losses against Oregon and Oregon State. Against a highly disciplined Oregon side with Australian legend Rachael Doyle serving as assistant coach, Stanford found themselves unable to fashion many high-percentage chances, with just five shots on target from 13 attempts in a 2-1 loss that saw Stanford’s goal come in quite literally the last second of the game. Conversely, Oregon finished with four shots on target from just five attempts. Sayer would play 45 minutes after starting, splitting her time between the first and second half and finishing with a shot. Things started much better for the Cardinal against Oregon State, going up 1-0 inside half an hour, only to concede twice in the second half as Oregon State netted an 83rd minute winner to score on two of their three shots on target for the game. Sayer played all bar 5 first half minutes, testing the goalkeeper with a free kick in what was perhaps one of Stanford’s better chances of the games as an attack missing the likes of the now-professional Catarina Macario and Sophia Smith looks to find their way.
Having played only a cameo in La Salle’s demolition of Delaware State a couple of weeks ago, Alyssa Van Heurck was ever-present for La Salle in their win over Drexel as a pair of blue and gold teams faced off in Philadelphia. A penalty shortly after halftime split the teams, which was a fair enough result considering the even split in the major statistical categories. Van Heurck played the full 90 minutes for the Explorers, finishing with one of La Salle’s 11 shots.
