2024 NCAA Division I Week 9 Wrap

Alabama State’s original Senior Day celebrations were altered due to Alcorn State cancelling their scheduled matchup, but the move forward suited Madison Chambers as the Tasmanian was instrumental in the Hornets’ win over Mississippi Valley State. The Tasmanian capped her own senior day with an 11th minute assist on the game’s opening goal as the Hornets put the Devilettes to the sword, rolling to a 5-1 victory following three goals in the final 16 minutes. The result, in a match that also saw Grace Norbury play 81 minutes, saw Alabama State move into second place in the SWAC with three games to play. Although a number of teams around them have games in hand, it is the Hornets who have the points on the board at this stage, and several of those teams with games in hand will play each other down the stretch.

However, two teams featuring Aussies have already reached the conference tournament, with a couple of those players instrumental for their respective outfits. Despite dropping points in a draw with bottom team Southeast Missouri State, Candice Kilderry and Little Rock remain tied atop the Ohio Valley Conference standings, with the weekend’s results confirming conference tournament spots for the Trojans, as well as Lindenwood and Tennessee Tech. Little Rock and Lindenwood face off in the penultimate game of the regular season in a game that may yet decide the regular season crown and top seed in the tournament. That seeding carries extra importance in the Ohio Valley Conference, with the top seed not only securing a double-bye, but also hosting the semi-finals and championship game.

A Maine outfit featuring Lara Kirkby and Grace Wilson picked up a win over Annie Grove and UMBC, securing their own spot in the America East conference tournament as they moved to 5-0 in league play. Kirkby was once again dangerous from midfield, tallying three shots and putting two on target, and at this stage it is surely only a matter of time before the South Australian adds to her three goals for the campaign.

Similar to the Ohio Valley, the top seed is guaranteed hosting rights throughout their tournament campaign, but that will only be extra incentive going forward for a Black Bears team looking to make amends after the regular season crown slipped through their fingers in 2023. Maine hold a 3-point lead over New Hampshire, who have a game in hand, with the teams facing off on the final day of the regular season. However, the team from Orono have two more games between now and then, so they won’t be able to look too far ahead.

Meanwhile, in the West Coast Conference, Australians occupy each of the top two positions in a league where the regular season crown is all that matters. Katie Godden and Oregon State maintained their unbeaten record in league play, moving to 4-0-1 with a 3-1 win over San Diego as Godden registered one shot in her 63 minutes on the pitch. Meanwhile, Holly Furphy played 13 minutes off the bench as Santa Clara’s 2-0 win over Loyola Marymount ensured the gap to Oregon State remained at three points as they moved to 3-0-1 in league play. However, with still six games to play for Santa Clara, including a matchup between the Beavers and Broncos in the first week of November, this battle is not even at its midway point.

Claire Scarpin had played only 27 minutes this season coming into Saint Francis’ game against Fairleigh Dickinson, but that number increased astronomically despite the 1-0 defeat for the Red Flash. The South Australian played 49 minutes off the bench to almost triple her season minutes tally, and hopefully that extended stint off the bench is a sign of things to come for the freshman as the Red Flash look to make a late charge towards the four-team Northeast Conference tournament.
