Mercifully, Week 3 saw some cancelled games replaced at the last minute which helped bolster the number of contests. That also meant we finally saw the first game of Amy Sayer’s Stanford career, but the former Canberra United and Sydney FC star wasn’t the only midfielder to enjoy a solid college debut.
With their game against Ashley Jordan’s San Francisco called off, Stanford managed to pull together a fixture against a Pepperdine side that had beaten them last season, and for a long time it looked as though the Waves would repeat the dose as they held a 1-0 lead heading into the final ten minutes. However, an 83rd minute worldie from Sierra Enge and an 87th minute penalty from Civana Kuhlmann resulted in a 2-1 Stanford victory. Sayer performed admirably during her 78 minutes in midfield, and was also entrusted with splitting corner taking duties with Sarah Paulso as well as attempting a shot from one of Stanford’s few free kick opportunities.
Grace Norbury’s Alabama State side had a mixed weekend in falling to two defeats, but the Victorian midfielder was steadfast for the Hornets as she played all bar 11 minutes of her opening weekend of college soccer. Norbury notched a pair of shots with one on target as Alabama State gave a respectable showing in a 3-1 defeat to Troy, with the freshman playing 79 minutes. Norbury followed that up with a full game performance against UAB, however things were far tougher for a Hornets side backing up from the game against Troy as they fell to a heavy 8-1 defeat. Alabama State trailed just 2-1 at halftime, but the second half saw the Blazers pull away as their class shone through in the latter stages. Sophie Bui also featured for the Hornets against Troy, playing 18 minutes.
Sandra Hill remained integral to the Grand Canyon side as the Lopes split a pair of games against Utah Valley, picking up their first win of the season in the process. The Cambodian national team representative played 77 minutes in the opening game of the weekend, a 1-0 loss in which Hill was unlucky to be the recipient of a shove away from the ball which prevented her from having any chance of shutting down the cross that eventually resulted in a goal. Hill came off the bench for the second game of the week to play 32 minutes as Grand Canyon secured sweet revenge with a 1-0 victory of their own to start conference play 1-1.
