2021 Week 7 Preview

A couple of brief slip-ups aside, Long Beach State have put together a solid campaign to this point, and Aimee Medwin has been a large part of that. A regular starter for Beach, Medwin put in her second 90-minute shift of the season against Hawaii last week and will now look to help her team build on their 2-0 conference start as they take on UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton. Cal State Fullerton are considered among the favourites in the Big West alongside Long Beach State, but dropped their league opener to midpack Cal Poly last week, so will be hungry to atone for that defeat. Meanwhile, UC Riverside are expected to struggle this season, but have sprung a win against Loyola Marymount this week on their way to a 3-6 record.

Amy Sayer and Stanford also started league play on a high last week, knocking off Utah, and this week welcome Oregon State and Oregon to the Farm. Oregon State’s season-opening eight-game winning streak was broken last week by USC, but the Beavers remain an unexpectedly dangerous proposition. Meanwhile, Oregon may only have five wins so far, but also remain undefeated with draws in their other four games, including last week against national title contender UCLA. Both of these teams beat Stanford last season, but plenty has changed since then, with the Cardinal back among the nation’s elite. Hopefully we also see Lara Kirkby on the pitch for Oregon after limited opportunities to this point in her freshman year.

Indianna Asimus has been on a tear of late, starting the last five games in succession and tallying her first two goals for Illinois State. Moreover, the Redbirds have won three of those five games after starting the season 1-6. The senior will now look to continue that form against a pair of teams that lost to league favourites Loyola Chicago last week. Both Northern Iowa and Evansville have been in patchy form this season, with Northern Iowa sitting at 4-6-1 and Evansville at 5-2-4. Illinois State will be expecting to challenge for the conference title this season, and wins against these tricky opponents will be vital, as will the continued solid form of Asimus.

There is also the continued return from injury of Greta Kraszula for VCU to keep an eye on this week. Having played 56 minutes in her first game back against George Mason, it will certainly be intriguing to see how much playing time the freshman receives as the Rams face conference heavyweights Saint Louis before taking on Massachusetts later in the week. From a team perspective, VCU are sitting at 7-2 and have won three on the trot, so this may be the best time for them to face a team of Saint Louis’ calibre if they are to sneak the three points.
