2021 Week 8 Preview

Claire Farrington’s Butler face Georgetown this week in one of the most anticipated game in the Big East in 2021, and it’s the conference championship rematch we were all hoping for as both teams come in undefeated in league play. In fact, Georgetown come in undefeated all season, but have drawn six of their 12 games so far, so the Hoyas aren’t quite as dominant as they were in 2020, in which they finished 11-0-1 in the regular season. Meanwhile, Butler have won 10 of 11 games since an opening day defeat to Michigan, and sit top of the Big East standings. That may even make the Bulldogs favourites, although it is expected to be a tight contest. As has been the case throughout the season, Farrington remains a crucial member of the Butler defence, whilst one of Georgetown’s main attacking weapons hails from the other side of the Tasman, with senior Daisy Cleverley set to control the midfield for Georgetown.

Staying with the theme of high-flying teams, USC sit top of the standings in the Pac-12 and this week welcome the mountain schools of Colorado and Utah to McAllister Field as they look to maintain their position atop a conference that decides its champion on league play alone. Neither opponent this week is predicted to cause major waves in the Pac-12 this season, particularly Utah, who have garnered just one point from their three games. However, playing a pair of opponents who spend the vast majority of their time training and playing at altitude brings its own challenges, particularly from an endurance standpoint and it is just about guaranteed that USC will have to be on for the entire 90 minutes. Isabel Rolley looks set to play a large part in ensuring that is the case, with her minutes off the bench steadily increasing over the last four games to the point where the junior played 47 minutes in the 4-1 win over Arizona State last week. If her minutes keep increasing like this, surely a move into the starting lineup can’t be far away.

Meanwhile, Stanford dropped a game to Oregon State last week to sit three points shy of the lead in the Pac-12, and a road trip to face Washington State isn’t going to make things any easier. The Cougars sit equal top with USC, but Amy Sayer and her teammates will see the game as an opportunity to move up the standings with a win over one of the three teams currently ahead of them in the standings. The Cardinal will also face Washington this week, who have managed two draws in their three Pac-12 games but remain without a win in league play. For Sayer, this week shapes as one to make up for last week’s wayward shooting effort, in which the midfielder put in two solid performances but managed to put just two of her 12 shots on target. However, with two goals in as many games earlier in the season, Sayer certainly has proven her goalscoring ability at this level already.

Finally, we take a look at Greta Kraszula, who has played 136 of a possible 186 minutes since returning from injury a couple of weeks ago. Even more impressively, the freshman had played only 59 minutes in her three appearances prior to that injury. It is quickly becoming clear that Kraszula will have a massive part to play for the Rams going forward, and the former Northern Tigers defender will have another chance to display her abilities in a top-of-the-table Atlantic 10 clash against Dayton this week. VCU are undefeated this season after knocking off Massachusetts and conference heavyweights Saint Louis last week, and look primed to continue that dominance as the season progresses. However, Dayton will be no pushovers, as although their 4-1 conference record features a number of opponents lower down the table, their wins have been comprehensive. However, that will just give VCU more impetus to show Dayton that they are merely pretenders among a group of contenders, and hopefully Kraszula continues to play the kind of minutes we have seen in recent weeks.
