2022 Week 3 Wrap

The goals and assists may not have flowed as they have in previous weeks, but Week 3 certainly saw a number of Australians play key roles in victories, with a number of defensive players proving to be vital to their teams’ fortunes.

Courtney Butlion had already knocked home a couple of goals this season, but turned provider this week as the Western Australian celebrated her elevation to the starting lineup with an assist in La Salle’s win over Albany. Fresh off a win over Colgate earlier in the week, La Salle came into their game against the Great Danes with a chance to pick up a fifth win in just six contests. A 52nd minute penalty set the Explorers on their way, before Butlion found Kelli McGroarty at the far post 15 minutes later to double the advantage and secure the points.

Meanwhile, down in Texas it was the UTRGV side featuring Caitlin Webster and Dani Rutstein who secured victory in the return fixture against Molly Arens and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. There was no 4-3 barnburner this time though, as a 24th minute goal stood up for UTRGV. Although Rutstein didn’t see playing time in this particular game, Webster played 13 minutes off the bench, whilst Arens tallied one of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s 12 shots during a 77-minute outing.

UMBC picked up five wins last season and already look good value to outstrip that number after Annaliese Grove helped lead the Retrievers to a pair of victories and move to 4-1-1 through three weeks of action. UMBC edged to a 1-0 win over Delaware State early in the week, but their victory over Long Island later in the week came despite being thoroughly outshot. UMBC managed just four shots, with three on target, but hit the back of the net on two occasions. Conversely, Long Island failed to hit the target with all eleven of their shots, allowing UMBC to come away with the 2-0 win. Grove played just over an hour in each contest and certainly looks assured in the fullback position at this stage.

Moving south to Virginia, Greta Kraszula has been easing her way into things for VCU since returning from the Under 20 World Cup and this week brought the first 90-minute performance of her career. Having already played 74 minutes in VCU’s win over William & Mary earlier in the week, Kraszula was ever present in the Rams’ 0-0 draw with East Carolina that saw VCU hold their opponents to just two shots on target. Kraszula also got involved in the attack, tallying a shot for the third time in four appearances this season.

On the topic of shots, Amy Sayer may not have tallied a goal this week but the junior remained highly dangerous as Stanford got the better of Penn State before putting Cal Poly to the sword. The former Sydney FC midfielder played 42 minutes in what could be a crucial win against Penn State when it comes time to decide the NCAA Tournament seedings as the Cardinal picked up a 2-0 victory. Sayer then rattled off five shots in just 52 minutes against Cal Poly, with two on target as Stanford rolled to a 4-1 victory.

Staying in California, Aimee Medwin was once again integral to Long Beach State’s success as the team came away with a win and a draw from their two games this week. Beach dominated Fresno State on their way to a 4-0 win, with Medwin playing 75 minutes. Things were slightly tougher against San Diego, with the Tasmanian playing the full 90 minutes in a 2-2 draw that saw Long Beach State score the equaliser courtesy of a spectacular bicycle kick from Lena Silano with just two minutes to play.

Finally, it’s not often that an eight-minute performance is worth getting excited about, but this one was slightly different. Having not played since the opening game of 2021, Hannah Peric returned for Massachusetts in their 2-2 draw with UMass-Lowell to hit the pitch for the first time in almost thirteen months. Hopefully this is just the first step to Peric returning to the kind of form that saw the Manly United product secure the College Matildas Defensive Player of the Year in her freshman season.
