2022 Week 7 Wrap

There’s little better than seeing Aussies instrumental in helping teams launch a conference championship charge, and we’re certainly seeing that this season on both the east and west coast. Meanwhile, we saw yet another collegiate debut for an Aussie as one player finally saw her first minutes at NCAA Division I level.

It’s been a long time coming, but Week 7 saw Lua Suero make her long-awaited debut for Kent State as the Golden Flashes took on Western Michigan. The freshman subbed on just before halftime before returning for the final 17 minutes of the game to notch a 22-minute appearance in a 3-1 defeat. Clearly, Suero did enough in that outing to earn more playing time in the second game of the week and rewarded the coaches’ faith. A 50-minute performance in a 2-2 draw against Toledo included a shot on target and an assist on the opening goal as Suero laid off the ball for a teammate who lashed home from about 13 yards. Despite earning only one point from their two games this week, Kent State sit just three points off the lead in the Mid-American Conference in a fairly healthy fourth position.

Meanwhile, Long Beach State are sitting pretty at the top of the Big West, with Aimee Medwin remaining integral to the team’s fortunes. Beach knocked off Cal State Fullerton 2-1 in a crucial match between title contenders, with Medwin playing the full 90 minutes and receiving the hockey assist on Beach’s opening goal after her ball into open space was crossed expertly by Lena Silano for Sophie Jones to head home.

Beach then travelled to Hawai’i to take on Eliza Ammendolia and the Rainbow Wahine, with both teams a chance to move to the top of the Big West Standings. Both Medwin and Ammendolia started, but it was the Tasmanian who came away with the three points as Long Beach State emerged with a 2-0 victory despite the shooting stats being almost identical. Both teams finished with 13 total shots, with the only difference being Beach’s additional shot on target as they won that category 7-6. Beach now hold a 2-point lead atop the Big West standings with a game in hand over Cal State Bakersfield, with another three teams a further point behind.

In the Atlantic 10, both Greta Kraszula and Hannah Peric find themselves just behind the league leaders and ready to strike should the opportunity arise as they maintained their solid form. Peric’s comeback continued with a pair of performances off the bench, playing just over 25 minutes on each occasion as Massachusetts knocked off both Duquesne and St. Bonaventure to the tune of a 1-0 scoreline. Both games featured plenty of attack, with a total of 29 shots in the Duquesne contest and 43, of which Massachusetts took 26, in the matchup with St. Bonaventure. However, the odd goal was enough on both occasions for the Minutewomen to finish the weekend in 3rd position, level with VCU but having played an additional game.

VCU played just the one game this week, a rivalry matchup with Richmond that the Rams never looked close to losing. Kraszula played the full 90 minutes as VCU held the Spiders to just four shots and only one on target. An 18th minute opener was enough to secure the victory, but two goals in the space of five minutes just after the 70-minute mark saw the Rams head home with a 3-0 victory to extend their undefeated streak to 11 games as they now sit 5-1-7 for the season.
