2022 Week 7 Preview

Before we take a look at the Week 7 slate, there is an update on Molly Arens, who dominated for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last week before being forced off late in their game against Nicholls State. Unfortunately, Arens suffered a fractured fibula and will be out for the remainder of what had been an outstanding season to this point on both a personal and team level.

Moving to the upcoming games, two absolute College Matildas superstars face off as Aimee Medwin’s Long Beach State head to Hawai’i to take on a Rainbow Wahine side led by Eliza Ammendolia. Both teams are in fairly healthy positions in the Big West at this early stage in conference play, but there is an absolute logjam that could be blown wide open depending on this weekend’s results. Long Beach State will play table-topping Cal State Fullerton before heading to the Aloha State, and six points from their two games could send Beach to the top of the table. Meanwhile, Hawai’i currently sit second but have played three games to the two that Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton have each played, making a win in this game just slightly more crucial to their conference regular season title hopes. However, regardless of the result, expect both Medwin and Ammendolia to be instrumental to their respective teams’ performances. Medwin has played 90 minutes in all bar two of her appearances this season, whilst Ammendolia has started all of eight of Hawai’i’s games in 2022, and tallied her first assist of the season against Cal Poly last week.

Meanwhile, in the Sun Belt we find two Aussies looking to cement their spots in the rotation as Asha McClurg and Coastal Carolina face Emma Bates and Louisiana in Lafayette. Both teams are in desperate need of victory to climb up the league table, with Coastal yet to pick up a point and the Ragin’ Cajuns with just a draw to show for their three games. McClurg has been in and out of the starting lineup in her six appearances since making the move from JUCO, and will be looking to put in a solid shift in defence to lock down a spot in the starting eleven. Meanwhile, Emma Bates’ debut for Louisiana was delayed due to injury, with the midfielder having only returned in the last couple of weeks. However, having played just 17 minutes on debut before a 29-minute outing in the Ragin’ Cajuns most recent contest, hopefully Bates’ minutes can continue to steadily build.

Heading to the Pac-12, Oregon and their Aussie duo of Isabel Rolley and Lara Kirkby have a chance to lay down a serious marker as they host both UCLA and USC this week in what could be a crucial pair of games in the hunt for an NCAA Tournament berth. UCLA are flying high as the #1 team in the nation and the only side with a perfect record at this stage, so even grabbing a draw against the Bruins would be a massive result for the Ducks. Meanwhile, Talia Grossman and USC sit only a couple of spots above Oregon in the RPI rankings, and a win for either team would do wonders for both their potential finish in the Pac-12 and their chase for an NCAA Tournament spot. Comeback from injury aside, Rolley has been a 90-minute player all season for the Ducks, whilst Lara Kirkby has made eight appearances this season after making only one in 2021, and hopefully we once again see both Aussies turning out on one of the biggest home weekends of the season for the team.
