2023 Week 6 Wrap

This week had all the makings of a big one for College Matildas, and it delivered in spades. The Atlantic 10 continues to be a hotbed of action for Aussies, whilst a couple of defenders delivered vital assists to help lead their team to victories as the players more accustomed to defending the goal attacked the opposite end with aplomb.

But first, our sincere apologies for this week’s wrap being a day late. We’ve been busy preparing for something…

Courtney Butlion may have only seen 24 minutes of action off the bench in La Salle’s 3-0 win over Richmond, but that was more than enough time for the Western Australian to have an impact on the game. Not only did Butlion notch one of two assists on the opening goal just before halftime, the junior stepped up to take a 76th minute penalty to put the game beyond doubt at 3-0 with less than 15 minutes to play. The Explorers now sit three points off the pace in the Atlantic 10, but have a game in hand on five of the six teams sitting above them.

That team setting the pace in the Atlantic 10 is Massachusetts, whose hunt for a conference regular season title was given a boost by the head of Hannah Peric as the Minutewomen picked up a pair of wins this week to sit at 3-1-0 in league play. The Manly United product was ever-present in her side’s 1-0 win over Greta Kraszula and VCU, holding off the Rams despite being outshot 14-7. UMass would follow that win with a 5-0 drubbing of Davidson, and it was Peric who started the goalscoring, heading home from a free kick for the second goal of her career in the 34th minute. The Minutewomen held Davidson to just six shots on target, with Peric playing 81 minutes before earning an early mark for her efforts.

Sophie MacAlpine had not seen the pitch since starting in Eastern Kentucky’s win over Eastern Michigan on September 3, but the former Macarthur Ram celebrated her former club’s NPLNSW championship with an impressive performance of her own in her return against Kennesaw State. Not only did the junior assist in holding the Owls to just one shot on target in a 3-1 win, MacAlpine was also pivotal in the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute. Retreating to the back post as a free kick was floated in, MacAlpine headed the incoming ball back across the face of goal for a teammate to head home for a 2-1 advantage. A third goal would come 12 minutes later, sealing things for the Colonels.

Illinois dominated #19 Michigan in a 2-1 win, and the team in orange and blue had Bel Rolley to thank for setting them on their way to victory. Not only did the senior help hold Michigan to only five shots on target and tally two shots in her 53 minutes of action, it was her work up the pitch that allowed Illinois to score the opener in the 20th minute. Winning the ball as two Illinois players converged on a Michigan player in possession, Rolley immediately found teammate Makala Woods. Woods fashioned an opening to slot the ball home with an impressive finish. A second goal would follow 7 minutes later, and although an 87th minute goal from Michigan delivered a tense finish, the Illini held on for their first win in Big Ten play to sit in a four-way tie for fifth after three games.
