2024 NCAA Division I Week 10 Wrap

VCU remain in the hunt for one of the final spots in the Atlantic 10 conference tournament, and they have Greta Kraszula to thank after the Sydneysider produced one of the highlights of the season. Facing mid-table foes Duquesne in something of a six-pointer at this stage, Kraszula opened the scoring with an Olimpico in the 18th minute, putting her corner out of the goalkeeper’s reach before it nestled in the net. Although Duquesne would equalise shortly after, a 65th minute winner was enough to hand the Rams a vital three points. The goal, Kraszula’s first of the season, helped VCU into a three-way tie for seventh with two games to play in a conference that features an eight-team conference tournament. Intriguingly for Australian fans, VCU’s final game of the season comes against Hannah Peric and Massachusetts, who find themselves tantalizingly close to securing a top-four berth and a home quarter-final.

Courtney Butlion played just 21 minutes in Towson’s match against Monmouth, but that was enough time for the Western Australian to seal a vital win for the Tigers, who now sit just one point outside the CAA conference tournament spots with two games to play and a game in hand on sixth-placed College of Charleston. After two goals in each of her two seasons at La Salle, Butlion has now eclipsed that number with her third goal of the campaign to go with two assists.

Meanwhile, Tarleton State have no such worries about fighting for a conference tournament spot after the Texans clinched a spot in the WAC tournament courtesy of Adelaide Wyrzynski’s assist against Southern Utah. The freshman’s cross found a teammate’s head for the game’s only goal in the 23rd minute, with the three points putting Tarleton State four points clear of the chasing pack – which includes Southern Utah themselves – with just a single game to play. The assist was hardly Wyrzynski’s only involvement though, with the freshman rattling off five shots and putting three of those on target to remain dangerous throughout the match.

Their own results may not have gone Bellarmine’s way this week, with two losses seeing Teagan Douglas and the Knights slip down the Atlantic Sun table slightly. However, other results went exactly the way they needed, ensuring that the team from Louisville would secure a first conference tournament berth since 2021. With one match remaining in the regular season, the Knights are guaranteed to finish either seventh or eighth regardless of results.

Elsewhere, Claire Scarpin has gone from occasional short cameos to almost speedrunning achievements in the latter stages of her freshman season at Saint Francis. Having posted a season-high for minutes a couple of weeks ago with 49 minutes against Fairleigh Dickinson, the South Australian made her first start of the season in a 1-0 loss to Wagner, playing 56 minutes. Despite the result, the achievement certainly bodes well for Scarpin’s future with the Red Flash.
