An Aussie v Aussie matchup in the Big South awaits this week with all to play for on both sides as Meg Roden’s High Point side taken on a UNC Asheville outfit featuring freshman star Mercedes McNabb and defensive stalwart Jasmine Barry. UNC Asheville have already been through plenty this season after being forced off campus due to Hurricane Helene, but remain right in the hunt for a conference tournament spot. With three conference games cancelled due to Helene, the league has moved to a points per game ranking system, which currently maintains High Point’s position atop the standings, but sees UNC Asheville sit in seventh with three points through three games. The Bulldogs do play teams above them in their three remaining games, but the midtable of the conference is incredibly close and one result could shake things up massively. Meanwhile, High Point need only to keep winning to clinch the regular season crown and top seed for the conference tournament. Whatever the result, expect all three Aussies to be highly involved, with all three averaging around an hour of playing time per game and McNabb already with five goals to her name this season.
Saint Francis are in ‘win and hope’ mode at this stage, with a tie for the last tournament spot the best they can hope for in the Northeast Conference, which features only a four-team tournament. However, this week sees Claire Scarpin and Aimee Benton take on Izzy Stein and Long Island, who are just three points off that fourth spot, making this game utterly vital for both teams. Long Island will also play fourth-placed Howard in their first game of the weekend, making the latter stretch of conference play absolutely tantalizing as momentum swings on every result. Regardless of the situation, it will be especially interesting to see if Saint Francis freshman Scarpin can continue her late-season momentum after earning her first start last week and playing around 50 minutes in two of the last three games. Meanwhile, for the Sharks, captain Stein is always one to watch as the Manly United product looks to steer her side towards a conference tournament berth after missing out in 2023.
Greta Kraszula and VCU also find themselves just on the outside of the conference tournament spots as the Atlantic 10 reaches its final weekend, however with other teams just above them playing each other, two wins will guarantee the Rams a spot in the 8-team postseason. However, they too will face another side featuring an Aussie as Hannah Peric’s Massachusetts come to town looking for three points to solidify their spot in the top four. Two wins for the Minutewomen would secure no worse than third spot in the league, and a home quarter-final against the #6 seed. Although a positive result would improve UMass’s fortunes, the game is certainly more pressing for VCU, who are looking to maintain a postseason streak going back as far as 2021.
Both teams featuring Aussies in the Ohio Valley Conference have already secured tournament berths, but Little Rock and Morehead State can each secure at least a first-round bye. Candice Kilderry and the Trojans are also still in with a shot of winning the regular season title if they can defeat Eastern Illinois, although they would be relying on the battle between Lindenwood and Tennessee Tech finishing in a draw. Morehead State face eighth-placed SIU Edwardsville, who are locked in a titanic struggle for the last spot in the tournament, and in any event, there isn’t a team in the OVC that hasn’t been susceptible to the occasional slip-up this season. However, with Lilly Bailey between the sticks and Natasha Tanner emerging as a crucial member of the Eagles’ lineup, the Aussies are well-placed to help keep the three points in Morehead and maintain a position in the top four.
Jacquelline Kambere and Mississippi Valley State are tantalizingly close to securing a SWAC tournament spot, and can secure their position with positive results this week as they face in-state foe Jackson State before hosting league leaders Southern, who will likely be without Australian defender Yazmin Baird-Watson. With Alcorn State cancelling their season due to a lack of players and amidst allegations of Title IX violations, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff yet to garner a point, one win could be enough to secure a tournament berth for the Devilettes after an extended streak of missing the postseason. Kambere has been a regular threat in front of net this season, but is yet to open her tally in conference play. This week would be a perfect time to change that.
