Aussies meet in the MAAC this week as Siena and Saint Peter’s enter Week 8 in vastly different circumstances. The top three may have skipped ahead atop the standings at this stage, but Iona Snape and Siena find themselves right among the chasing pack after the junior’s assist helped the Saints pick up a point against Fairfield to sit equal fifth after five of twelve conference games. Meanwhile, life has been far tougher in conference play for Saint Peter’s, who sit winless through five games, but it hasn’t been for a lack of effort from Sophie Cook and Wilma Thodhlana. Thodhlana has started in seven of the Peacocks’ eight games this year, whilst Cook played the full 90 minutes on three consecutive occasions before coming off the bench to play 59 minutes against Fairfield in midweek. Regardless of the final result, there is little doubt that all three Australians will be heavily involved for two teams seeking victory for differing reasons.
Isabella Chidiac has already passed her minutes total from 2023, and after rattling off three shots in half an hour of action last week against North Dakota, hopefully more playing time is in store as Denver face Oral Roberts in their only game of the week. This pairing makes up part of a three-way tie atop the Summit League standings at this early stage, although in a league in which each team only plays eight games, every result is magnified, so a win in this one will be of paramount importance. Denver expect, and are expected, to be atop the Summit League, and after falling in last year’s conference semi-finals after winning the regular season crown, will be especially motivated to dominate, but Oral Roberts are no shrinking violets after also reaching the semi-finals in 2023.
Hannah Peric headed home to knock off Rhode Island moved UMass level at the top of the Atlantic 10 standings, but the Minutewomen will need to remain at their best as they face a couple of potential trap games on the road at George Washington and Saint Joseph’s. George Washington were picked to finish 14th in the 15-team league, but have picked up a win and a draw in their first three games, albeit against other teams tipped to finish in the lower reaches of the league. Meanwhile, Saint Joseph’s find themselves in the opposite situation, having been tipped to finish seventh but yet to post a win and last week falling to a 2-0 defeat to a Davidson side picked to finish bottom of the league. On the face of it, this looks to be an easier week than most for UMass before they face fellow title contenders Dayton. However, if they don’t pick up six points from these two games, their destiny may already be out of their own hands even before they take on the Flyers next week. Fortunately, both Peric and the team are in outstanding form and their best should easily be enough to take care of business this weekend.
Alabama State sit 1-1 in SWAC play after splitting games against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Grambling State last week, and a schedule that is front-loaded with title contenders continues this week as the Hornets take on Yazmin Baird-Watson’s Southern side as well as Jackson State. Along with this week’s opponents, Grambling State and Alabama State themselves were picked to make up the top four in the SWAC this season, with the three Louisiana schools scooping all 18 first-place votes. Alabama State will be hoping that these games can demonstrate that last year’s ninth-place finish in the SWAC was but a mere blip, and their Aussie duo of Grace Norbury and Madison Chambers should be right among the action. Norbury has started all bar one of the Hornets’ game this year and averages in excess of 75 minutes per appearance, whilst Chambers has forced her way into the starting lineup for the last three games. Each of the Aussies also has one assist to their name this season, and one or two more this week certainly wouldn’t go astray against a couple of the toughest foes they will face throughout conference play.
