Margaux Chauvet has quite literally been in the middle of everything as Purdue compiled a 3-3-2 record in non-conference play, and the former Sydney FC midfielder looks as though she will remain integral to the process as the Boilermakers commence Big Ten play this week. Purdue head west to Madison to face Wisconsin, a team that not only reached the NCAA Tournament last year but annoyingly knocked off Aussie-laden Maine in the opening round on their way to a Round of 16 appearance. The Badgers finished 9th in the Big Ten last season but have been picked to finish 7th in 2025, whilst Purdue have been picked to finish 11th, one place higher than their 2024 position. However, Wisconsin have rolled to a 6-1 record to this point and are also ranked #23, positioning Purdue as the underdogs in this one. However, the Boilermakers’ attack will have taken confidence from last week’s 4-0 win over Western Illinois, and although Wisconsin are a step up in class from the Leathernecks, sometimes just seeing the ball hit the back of the net a few times is all a team needs to send them on their way.
Isabella Chidiac has been more about teeing up teammates than scoring goals herself, but Denver may need the senior to do both this week as the Pioneers face a pair of in-state rivals that have just one loss in a combined thirteen games this season. First up, they face a Colorado side that sits 5-1-1, with their only dropped results being a loss to Wisconsin and a draw with Michigan State, both of whom were nationally ranked at the time of the game. Meanwhile, Colorado State sit a perfect 6-0 and have conceded just two goals in the process. However, Denver defeated Colorado State last year and fell only 1-0 to a nationally ranked Colorado, so they aren’t too far removed from good performances against these very teams. Expect to see Chidiac heavily involved in midfield once again, and after hitting the bar with a shot last week, hopefully Week 5 provides a first goal for the Sydneysider, as well as a couple of wins.
A postponed game against Rutgers last week means Meg Roden and Providence have played just four games to this point, but the Friars are in a fairly strong position at 3-1. This week, they take on a pair of Ivy League teams, which is never a simple proposition. First up is Cornell, who may have been tipped to finish bottom of the Ivy League, but have compiled a 2-2-2 record including a draw with ACC side Boston College. However, their second opponent, Brown, tallied six of the 16 first-place votes in the Ivy League preseason poll and have already picked up a win over UConn and a draw with nationally ranked Wake Forest. Considering the Friars are only three weeks from playing UConn in a conference game, this weekend should be an excellent barometer for the Friars. Roden’s minutes have steadily increased from 55 on opening day to 85 in last week’s win over Sacred Heart, and hopefully that momentum can continue for the player from the national capital.
On the topic of Ivy League opponents, Lilly Bailey and Hofstra will face Kate Ryan and Dartmouth as two of the early season leaders for minutes per game among Australians face off. Bailey has played all bar 12 minutes across Hofstra’s six games, whilst Ryan subbed in just 19 minutes into Dartmouth’s season opener and has played every minute of the Big Green’s five games since. Dartmouth currently sit at 3-1-1, whilst Hofstra are 3-1-2 against a not dissimilar strength of schedule, so we could be in for an intriguing battle here. Defender Ryan and goalkeeper Bailey will be likely to keep their distance from each other, save possibly for any Dartmouth attacking set pieces, but both are expected to be instrumental to their respective team’s chances.
