We’re just about reaching the halfway point of the season, but things are just starting to heat up in this topsy-turvy season filled with upsets, cancellations, and general bedlam. This week, we’ll be watching as the Aussies in the Atlantic 10 face off, whilst Amy Sayer looks to grab a first collegiate goal as Stanford travel north to take on the Washington schools.
Stanford arrested their slide last week with wins over Utah and Colorado, and the Cardinal will look to continue their ascent back up the rankings against Washington and Washington State this weekend. Meanwhile, Amy Sayer continues the hunt for her first goal after going agonisingly close last week. The freshman hit the crossbar in each game against the teams from the mountain states, and it seems only a matter of time before Sayer contributes a goal. The trip to the northwest won’t be easy; Washington State have started strongly off the back of their College Cup appearance in 2019, sitting at 4-0-1 despite losing stars to graduation and the pro ranks, and star recruit Trinity Rodman to the NWSL. Meanwhile, Washington are also an impressive 4-0-2 and look certain to provide a stern challenge.
Meanwhile, the Atlantic 10 features a pair of Aussie v Aussie matchups as Hannah Peric takes on both Teresa Morrissey and Alyssa Van Heurck. The week starts with Peric and Morrissey facing off as Rhode Island travel to Massachusetts with both teams looking to atone for recent losses. Rhode Island, in particular, will be desperate to half a 4-game losing streak, whilst Massachusetts will be stinging from a 3-0 defeat to little sister Massachusetts-Lowell.
Although La Salle’s schedule has more holes in it than a block of Emmental, Van Heurck and the Explorers have put together a 3-0 record, but are yet to play a conference game so will be eager to start league play well. Both Peric and Van Heurck have been integral to their teams this season, so it will be no surprise if we see both players spend the vast majority of the game on the pitch.
Meanwhile, it was not a good midweek fixture for Ash Harvie and Eastern Illinois, who fell to a heavy 7-0 defeat to SIU Edwardsville. However, they will have a chance to rebound immediately against Tennessee Tech. The Golden Eagles are undefeated at this stage, but appear far less potent than SIU Edwardsville, with both of their victories coming in 1-0 games. Elsewhere in the OVC, Kiarnie Latham will have a chance to avenge her fellow Aussie freshman as Tennessee-Martin become the next team to attempt to stop SIU Edwardsville. The Skyhawks fell to a narrow 2-1 overtime defeat to Murray State (speaking of which, why does a program that once had Harriet Withers and Nyomi Devine not have any Aussies anymore!?) in midweek, and will also be hungry to get back to winning ways. The Ohio Valley Conference freshman duo have been one of the early success stories of the season, and both Harvie and Latham will no doubt be integral to their teams once again this week.
