Spring 2021 Week 5 Wrap

The freshmen are on an absolute tear this season as first-year players across the country make an early impact. Amy Sayer continues to star for Stanford, whilst in the Ohio Valley Conference, a pair of freshmen have already made a name for themselves.

It had been a few weeks coming, but this week finally saw Claire Farrington make her debut for Butler as the Bulldogs faced DePaul. Farrington entered the contest midway through the first half as Butler charged to a 3-0 halftime advantage, with the freshman eventually playing 47 minutes as Butler rolled to a 3-1 win to move to 4-0 to start the season.

Meanwhile, Amy Sayer continues to play a starring role for Stanford, who bounced back from last week’s calamity in Oregon with a pair of wins against the Pac-12’s mountain schools. Utah provided little more than token resistance as Stanford cruised to a 5-0 victory, with the crossbar proving more of a barrier to scoring than the opposition as Sayer almost broke it in two with a shot from the edge of the area that beat the Utes’ goalkeeper all ends up as the freshman saw 63 minutes of action. Colorado proved to be a far tougher opponent, with an 88th minute winner from Civana Kuhlmann, who rounded the goalkeeper before slotting home, proving decisive in a 2-1 victory. Once again, the crossbar proved to be Sayer’s nemesis in her hunt for a goal as the Sydneysider finished with a pair of shots in a 82-minute outing, with one clattering off the woodwork.

Grace Norbury also continued to shine in midfield, although her weekend was cut short after taking a knock in Alabama State’s 5-0 demolition of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The freshman played the full 90 minutes in the win, rattling off two shots including one on target. Sophomore Sophie Bui also finished with two shots on target in a cameo off the bench. However, neither player featured in a 1-1 draw with Ashley Commens’ Grambling State side, as a pair of rosters that combined to feature three Aussies saw a grand total of zero take to the pitch, with Norbury’s absence explained by the aforementioned knock taken in the game against UAPB.

Finally, the Aussie freshmen continue to blaze a trail through the Ohio Valley Conference as the story of Australian success in the league begins another chapter. Kiarnie Latham once again played 90 minutes in defence as Tennessee-Martin held Belmont to just three shots in a 1-0 win. Meanwhile, Ashleigh Harvie played all 106 minutes as Eastern Illinois bounced back from their loss to Latham and Tennessee-Martin with a 1-0 overtime win over Morehead State.
