Not only does this week’s Big East matchup between Butler and Creighton deliver an Aussie v Aussie matchup, it also delivers an intriguing battle of former W-League players and Northern NSW Youth Championship teammates who may even directly face each other. Former Brisbane Roar defender Claire Farrington has been in solid form for Butler in the opening few games of her career, scoring the game-winner against Marquette last week, whilst former Newcastle Jets forward Renee Pountney made her debut last week as Creighton faced Marquette. At the very least, both players should be expected to see the pitch this week for a decent stint off the bench, and it would be absolutely delicious to see the pair taking each other on as Farrington and the Butler defence look to shut down Pountney and the Creighton attack as the Bluejays look to pick up their first win of the season against the undefeated Bulldogs.
It’s been a long time coming for Jamie Campbell and Hartford, but the Hawks will finally play their first game of the season with a conference matchup against Binghamton. Cancellations have played havoc with Hartford’s season to this point, but the Hawks have finally managed to cobble together a game as they start a six-week sprint to the end of the America East conference season. As a freshman goalkeeper, it remains to be seen how much playing time the Florida-born Western Australian receives, but minutes in her first year would only aid Campbell’s development as she looks to become a long-term option between the sticks for the Hawks.
Alyssa Van Heurck and La Salle faced off against Hannah Peric and Massachusetts last week, and this week brings a new Aussie foe in the form of Teresa Morrissey as the Explorers take on Rhode Island. Both Van Heurck and Morrissey are in good form, with Morrissey’s 8-save performance last week especially impressive, whilst Van Heurck was only the width of the crossbar away from scoring against Massachusetts. With two draws in their last two games, Rhode Island look to be inching closer and closer to a first win of the season, but La Salle will be a tough opponent. The Explorers sit at 3-1, and that loss came last week courtesy of a Hannah Peric 90th minute winner for Massachusetts in a game that La Salle topped the shot count 19-5, so Morrissey could find herself very busy. However, coming off an eight-save performance last week suggests that won’t bother the sophomore Victorian in the slightest.
