This week saw Alabama State celebrate Senior Day, and it was Grace Norbury serving up a present for senior teammate McKenna Wiscombe during the Hornets’ 4-0 win over Alcorn State. Returning to the starting lineup after missing last week recovering from a knock, Norbury quickly returned to form, finding Wiscombe with an incisive pass that the senior buried to open the scoring. The freshman would also finish with a shot on target, posing an attacking threat throughout the contest. Sophie Bui came off the bench for the Hornets, also registering a shot as the Montgomery-based side moved to 3-0-1 in conference play, just 2 points shy of 4-0-0 Prairie View A&M at this point.
Moving north, Alyssa Van Heurck and La Salle enjoyed a successful weekend with two wins in as many games. The Western Australian played every minute of the two games as the Explorers defeated Rhode Island 1-0 before escaping with a win over Saint Joseph’s. However, being ever-present was hardly Van Heurck’s only achievement for the weekend, with the junior scoring the opener in the win over Saint Joseph’s. An early corner found its way to Van Heurck, who nodded the ball home to set the Explorers on their way, going up 3-1 before an 82nd minute goal from Saint Joseph’s set up a grandstand finish.
Teresa Morrissey was not between the sticks for Rhode Island’s loss to La Salle, but returned to the lineup against Boston College, and was once again called upon regularly following last week’s 8-save performance against Saint Joseph’s. With the Rams coming off two draws in their previous three games, it was only a matter of time before they belted the door down and picked up their first win, and six saves from Morrissey helped Rhode Island to a 3-2 victory in overtime. The win represented Rhode Island’s first victory over the Eagles in program history, having picked up one draw in among five losses in the six previous meetings between the two sides.
Finally, there was some unfortunate news to come out of Hartford, with the Hawks appearing to have cancelled their season. Whilst no official announcement has been made, all matches on the schedule on their website is listed as cancelled, meaning Western Australian goalkeeper Jamie Campbell’s debut will have to wait until the fall season.
