Even before accounting for the Aussies on either side, this week’s matchup between Harvard and Santa Clara is already one of the matches of the week, if not the entire non-conference slate. Holly Furphy’s Santa Clara side is currently ranked #10 in the nation, with their only losses to this point coming against national powerhouses UCLA and #1 Stanford. Meanwhile, Erin Gordon and Harvard may have only won four of their seven games to this point, but remain undefeated after securing draws in their other three contests. This game also serves as each team’s final non-conference game, and for both teams, this game shapes to be tougher than the vast majority of opponents they will face going forward so will be an excellent litmus test. We didn’t see Holly Furphy for Santa Clara against Stanford last week, but hopefully that changes this week as Erin Gordon looks set to maintain her position as an all but ever-present member of the Crimson defence.
Candice Kilderry was dominant against Arkansas-Pine Bluff last week, finishing with a brace, and will look to put another SWAC team to the sword this week as Jacquelline Kambere and Mississippi Valley State come to town. Neither team has posted the kind of record they would want at this stage as both sit below .500, but preparing for conference play is the real goal at this stage, with a conference championship the only realistic path to the NCAA Tournament for teams in either the Ohio Valley Conference or SWAC. However, Kilderry and Kambere have been heavily involved for their respective sides and there appears no reason for that to change in this game. Kambere has started all four games for the Devilettes to this point and averaged in excess of 80 minutes per appearance, whilst Kilderry has started all eight of Little Rock’s games this season. The Victorian’s brace against UAPB also shot her straight to equal leadership of the team’s scoring chart as the midfielder emerges as a vital part of the Trojans’ lineup after starting just three times in 2023.
On the east coast, a cross-town battle of Sydneysiders looms, as SD Raiders product Tahlia Voskanian and Coastal Carolina take on former Manly United and Bulls FC Academy midfielder Alice Thompson’s Old Dominion side in each team’s Sun Belt opener. Voskanian made her debut with eight minutes off the bench last week, and will be looking for more minutes as the 4-3-2 Chanticleers take on an Old Dominion side sitting at 5-3 but picked to finish top of the league this year. The Monarchs have every right to be considered the class of the field after securing the crown in 2023 and taking the lead against Georgetown before falling to a 2-1 defeat in their NCAA Tournament opener. With a solid freshman class helping to offset the loss of Turkish star Ece Turkoglu, the Monarchs again look strong. That freshman class of course includes Thompson, who has started in three of her five appearances to this point and will hopefully once again be among the matchday eleven in this contest.
America East play kicks off this week, and Maine’s opener could well be one of the games of the conference’s entire schedule as they take on Binghamton. Last season, a draw between these two teams was arguably the result that allowed Binghamton to take the regular season crown, although Maine eventually secured the conference tournament crown and a spot in the NCAA Tournament on the back of some scintillating play by Lara Kirkby. However, 2024 will see these teams each have the chance to set the tone, with the pair tabbed to finish as the top two in the conference. Kirkby looks set to be crucial to Maine’s successes in attack, but between the sticks, freshman Grace Wilson has already acquitted themself superbly. The Young Matildas’ Under 20 World Cup representative slotted straight in last week, picking up both America East Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week after making five saves and keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Holy Cross.
