Spring 2021 Week 1 Preview

We’re more or less easing into the season this week, with only six teams featuring Aussies taking to the pitch. However, this includes a number of players who could make their debuts, with Grand Canyon’s Sandra Hill the only Australian player with NCAA Division I playing experience whose team is playing this week.

Hill and Grand Canyon face a pair of in-state rivals this week, and they’re starting with a big one. The Antelopes host Pac-12 side Arizona in their opening game of the season, and will need to be at their best to have a chance in this one. The Wildcats finished sixth in the premier conference in the nation in 2019, making them a tough prospect for most teams. Grand Canyon will then face Northern Arizona at home, a slightly easier proposition but hardly a given victory after the Lumberjacks finished midtable in the Big Sky in 2019. However, Grand Canyon are coming off a confidence-boosting 12-1 exhibition win over Benedictine Mesa, in which Hill played 57 minutes.

A pair of Texas-based players have the chance to make their NCAA Division I debuts this week, albeit in vastly different circumstances. Madison McComasky has already spent a year in NAIA before spending last season playing at the junior college level, and has finally worked her way into a Division I program with Incarnate Word. The Cardinals kick off their season against Prairie View A&M before facing UTRGV, with both games eminently winnable contests for the team from San Antonio. Meanwhile, freshman Molly Arens has the chance to make her debut for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as they also take on UTRGV in an extremely heated local rivalry. Not only are bragging rights on the line, but points towards the South Texas Showdown trophy competed for between the two athletic departments.

Nicholls State senior Shauni Reid also has the chance to make her debut this week after not making an appearance in 2019. Under a new head coach, the Colonels are looking to bounce back from 2019’s dismal campaign that saw them finish with just three wins in 18 games. They will start with a significant challenge against Conference USA side Southern Miss, whom they lost to in both 2017 and 2018. In the second game of the week, Reid and the Colonels will be out for revenge against local rival Southern University after falling 2-1 to the Jaguars in 2019. On the face of It, the Colonels would generally be expected to get the better of Southern, and an early win would do the team’s confidence no end of good.

Turning to the Pac-12, and there are two goalkeepers eager for their chance to play, but when they will get that chance remains to be seen as both sides have experienced goalkeepers on the roster. Regardless, USC’s Talia Grossman and Washington State’s Aly Hay each kick off their season this weekend. Washington State will head west to face Seattle, whilst Grossman and the Trojans will play in the famous Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum after USC’s home games were moved from their usual home patch to avoid clashes with the lacrosse team.
