Spring 2021 Week 1 Wrap

In a week littered with postponements, cancellations, and news of players not taking to the field for the Spring 2021 campaign, there was little to cover this week. However, a few notable moments did occur, with a couple of debuts and one player notching the first assist of the season.

Sandra Hill’s season started brilliantly, only for her weekend to be cut short by injury during Grand Canyon’s opener. The senior recorded an assist on Grand Canyon’s lone goal during their 4-1 loss to Arizona, laying the ball off for a teammate who banged one home from outside the area, but at the 63-minute mark was forced off with an injury after a contest in the box. Hill would walk off, but would not return to the game and also did not play in Grand Canyon’s 2-0 loss to Arizona later in the weekend.

Madison McComasky stepped straight into the fold for Incarnate Word on her opening weekend of NCAA Division I play, starting both games as the Cardinals split a pair of contests. The junior played the first 23 minutes against Prairie View A&M, finishing with a shot on target in a 2-1 victory for Incarnate Word. The Sydneysider followed up with a 32-minute performance against UTRGV as the Cardinals fell to a 1-0 defeat.

Shauni Reid also made her NCAA Division I debut this week as Nicholls State took on Southern Mississippi. The Western Australian came on midway through the second half, playing a 16-minute cameo as the Colonels fell to a 2-0 defeat. Unfortunately, any chances of more minutes this weekend fell by the wayside as Nicholls State’s game against Southern was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns.

Finally, we received word this week that Texas A&M-Corpus Christi freshman Molly Arens will be sitting out this season for as yet undisclosed reasons.
