Spring 2021 Week 2 Wrap

Once again there was but a small offering of games this week, with the majority of teams still yet to start their campaign. However, for a couple of Aussies, there was plenty to be excited about, especially if you’re a fan of wide players.

Sandra Hill remains the form player among the Australians, even as her Grand Canyon side fell to a pair of losses to Arizona State. The right fullback was one of the Lopes’ best as she played every minute of the weekend. Grand Canyon took their more fancied opponents all the way in the first of their two games, falling 3-2 to an overtime golden goal after leading 2-1 just after the half-hour mark before a late equaliser from the Sun Devils. Things weren’t quite so close in the second game of the weekend as Arizona State picked up a 4-0 victory, but Hill was once again one of the best on the pitch for Grand Canyon despite the scoreline suggesting a slightly leaky defence.

Star goalkeeper Teresa Morrissey and her Rhode Island teammates kicked their season off this season against local rivals Providence after an exhibition against Villanova was cancelled. Although the Rams fell to a 2-0 loss, Morrissey ensured the scoreline remained at a single goal until the final minute, making five saves in a full-game performance.

Although Rhode Island’s game against Villanova may have been cancelled, La Salle did play against the Wildcats, and an Explorers side featuring Alyssa Van Heurck feasted on their way to a 4-0 victory. The winger played 86 of the 90 minutes as La Salle produced a dominant performance to start their season perfectly. We also received word this week that Claudia Jenkins will not feature for La Salle this season despite still being listed on the roster, leaving a massive hole in the Explorer’s goalkeeping stocks.
