New seasons bring plenty of change and new faces, and this first week sees 9 freshmen potentially make their college debut. Kristy Helmers will have to wait a while to make her college bow at Nicholls State, but Julia De Angelis, Beattie Goad, Sam Roff, Caitlin Cantrill, Kate Swartwout, Demi Koulizakis, Teagan Micah, Jade Horcicka, and Lulu Pullar all have the opportunity to get on the field this weekend.
Elsewhere, Isobel Dalton has the chance to make her mark at Colorado after her transfer from NAIA, whilst Alexandra Huynh will make her competitive debut for Troy after leaving Colorado as the Buffaloes stand pat at 2 Aussies, even if one of the names is different.
In nearby Wyoming, we may see FIVE Australians starting for the Cowgirls as Alisha Bass, Candace Sciberras, Georgia Rowntree, Annika Clayton, and Jessie Gentle all have a chance at being named in the starting eleven. With Wyoming an outside chance at winning the Mountain West Conference this season, this is definitely one team to keep an eye on.
This first week will also see a few players look to improve on some less-than-impressive years in 2015. Neither Claire Urquhart of Albany nor Kiri Dale of Iona were afforded the opportunities to make an impact on their teams last season, and there is no doubt that these players will want to force their way into their teams’ lineups.
There is one Aussie v Aussie matchup this week, as sophomore Jai Jackson and Winthrop take on Kate Swartwout and Western Carolina on Monday morning (Australian time) in what should be a closely fought battle.
Possibly the game of the week will be Emily Hulbert’s Hofstra side taking on defending national champions Penn State. This game is a regular fixture nowadays and whilst Penn State have had the best of the Pride in recent years, the opportunity to watch an Aussie take on the defending champions is too good to turn down.
Other high-profile games this weekend will be Beattie Goad and Stanford taking on Georgetown, as well as Caitlin Cantrill’s LSU taking on Virginia Tech as both teams take on some excellent opponents in an attempt to get a big win on the board early. Julia De Angelis and Indiana also take on ACC side Louisville as they attempt to rebuild after winning just 3 games in 2015.
