There were plenty of goals and assists for the Australians this week, with no less than five Aussies tallying assists and three more scoring goals. The Nicholls State pair of Jess Coates and Kristy Helmers may have stolen the show but Troy defender Alex Huynh popped up with some surprising offensive impact to complement excellent defensive performances.
Jess Coates and Kristy Helmers were the undoubted stars of the week amongst the Australians. The attacking pair were instrumental for Nicholls State as the Colonels finished the weekend with two wins from their first two games. Coming up against Louisiana-Lafayette, the Nicholls State side fairly shredded the form book and threw it on the fire in a 3-1 victory in which Kristy Helmers tallied an assist on her debut. That, however, was just an appetiser for what the Aussie pair would bring in an 8-0 over Southern University. Jess Coates would finish with a hat-trick and an assist, whilst freshman Helmers tallied two goals of her own as well as two assists, only being denied Southland Conference Offensive Player Of The Week by, you guessed it, Jess Coates!
Alex Huynh has become a staple of the Troy backline, and there was no change this week as the senior played all bar 17 minutes of the week, only being subbed out late in the team’s third game of the week after picking up a yellow card. Helping the team to clean sheet victories against Belmont and Jacksonville State, Alex also helped the side at the attacking end, picking up two assists across the weekend with a pair of sublime free kicks that set teammates up perfectly as the Trojans finished with three victories, finishing the week with a 4-1 win over Alabama State.
Teagan Micah appears to have supplanted Siri Ervik as UCLA’s starter, with UCLA coach Amanda Cromwell impressed by the confidence that the young Queenslander gives the team’s back four. Tallying eleven saves across the weekend, Teagan kept a clean sheet in the Bruins’ 1-0 victory over Texas A&M, but couldn’t quite save the team in a 4-3 overtime loss to Florida in the side’s second game of the weekend. It must be said, however, that Teagan was left with little chance on any of Florida’s goals, with the match-winning golden goal coming from a deflection with Teagan in otherwise good position.
Paige Hayward kept up her goalscoring form, and her Texas Southern team needed her to after the team laboured to victory over NAIA team University of St. Thomas. In the side’s only game of the week, it was Paige’s penalty that proved to be the game-winner as the former UNSW striker tallied her fourth goal of the season.
Whilst Georgia Rowntree and Alisha Bass have been the standout Aussies at Wyoming so far, Annika Clayton is quietly going about her work and reaping the rewards. Although the Cowgirls went winless this past week, Annika helped ensure that they would at least secure a draw against Montana, feeding a pinpoint pass through to Michaela Stark for the opener, although Montana would hit back four minutes from time with a header that left Georgia Rowntree with no chance. Clayton unfortunately did not play against Iowa, although having sat in other games with a slight knock this may have been precautionary.
Texas freshman Monique Iannella has slotted straight into the Longhorns’ side, and this week made her first impact on the box score as her side finished the week with a pair of 3-1 wins against College of Charleston and Detroit. Playing 80 or so minutes in both games, Monique tallied an assist on Texas’ 2nd goal against College of Charleston that proved to be the game winner.
