In terms of attacking players, this week certainly belonged to Katie Godden even if her outstanding efforts couldn’t quite get DePaul over the line on either occasion. Scoring the opener against Marquette in a 3-2 defeat, the former Arsenal academy striker exhibited delightful control to chest a cross down into wide open space before lashing the ball home as the Marquette defence opted to socially distance in the box. Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles would score the next three goals of the contest and tighten up their defending from that point as DePaul finished with just three shots on target in the defeat.
Godden wasn’t done making an impact on the scoresheet, though. A delightful aerial through ball checked up on the first bounce and allowed Susie Soderstrom to round the ‘keeper and slot the ball home for a 15th minute equaliser against Xavier after DePaul had scored an early opener. However, a goal to Xavier in the opening minute of the second half proved the difference as once again DePaul failed to create many chances, finishing with just five shots and only three on target.
Once upon a time, a game between Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Nicholls State would have had Aussie fans on the lookout for a goal from Jess Coates, Kristy Helmers, or Tessa Calabria. However, nowadays, the Southland Conference presence is dominated by Islanders midfielder Molly Arens, who notched her third goal of the season in a 3-1 victory. With the scoreline reading 2-1 heading into the final 15 minutes, Arens followed up after the Nicholls State goalkeeper spilled a shot from Morgan Westbury, slotting home just before the ‘keeper could recover the ball and making sure of the victory. The goal also set an Islanders team record for most goals in one campaign with 25, and there are still six weeks left in the season.
Unfortunately, the match ended on a sour note for Arens, with the picture below more or less speaking for itself, and hopefully it’s a speedy recovery for the Islanders star.
Abbey Burns has been an inspired addition the UAB roster this season, starting all bar the first of the Blazers’ ten games this season. This week, the South Australian notched her first point of the season with the assist on the game’s only goal against Florida Atlantic. Fresh off a 1-0 win over Florida International, a tight match saw each team finish with only three shots for the entire contest. However, it was a delightful corner from Burns that resulted in a 14th minute winner for UAB. The freshman dropped the ball in perfect position to create havoc, and after a deflection, it nestled in the back of the net, and that proved to be enough for UAB to move to 6-2-2 and continue a highly impressive season to this point.
Assists for Eliza Ammendolia are nothing new, and it was yet another pinpoint pass by the star from the Riverina that put Hawai’i 2-0 up in their contest with Cal Poly. A perfect aerial ball found a teammate who slotted home, but that would be the end of the scoring for Hawai’i midway through the first half. Cal Poly would get one back before equalising in the dying seconds to see the Rainbow Wahine leave California with two points instead of the four they will feel they should have taken following their early two-goal lead.
However, the players tallying goals and assists weren’t the only ones getting heavily involved in the attack this week as Aimee Medwin helped Long Beach State wreak havoc on the Cal State Bakersfield defence in a 3-0 win. Although the Tasmanian didn’t score, her five shots – of which two were on target – more than doubled her previous career high of two as Beach peppered their opponents with 19 shots. If this becomes a regular occurrence, it is surely only a matter of time until Medwin tallies the first goal of her college career.
Meanwhile, Greta Kraszula continues her outstanding season and, like Medwin, finds herself providing support to the attack despite being known more as a defensive player. VCU picked up a pair of wins this week, knocking off St. Bonaventure before defeating Courtney Butlion’s La Salle side in an Aussie v Aussie matchup. The Rams outshot St. Bonaventure 29-6 and La Salle 16-8, with Kraszula playing the full 90 minutes on both occasions. The Under 20 World Cup representative also reeled off four shots against the Bonnies before testing the ‘keeper with one against La Salle as VCU look to bolster their CV and potentially secure the fallback option of an at-large NCAA Tournament bid should a conference title not eventuate in 2022.
Finally, there was more good news in the last set of midweek games prior to the weekend. Louisiana freshman Emma Bates, who had been suffering from a knee injury, made her long-awaited debut with a 17-minute came off the bench in a 2-2 draw with Georgia State. The former Northern Tigers midfielder followed this up with 29 minutes in a 1-0 defeat to South Alabama, and hopefully her minutes can continue to climb throughout the remainder of the campaign.
