2024 NCAA Division I Week 4 Wrap

Meg Roden is having another impressive season at High Point, and this week delivered one of the highlights of the season in the Panthers’ win over UNC Greensboro. In a game that really could have gone either way as the attacking stats were incredibly close, Roden delivered from a corner in the 38th minute, sending home an Olimpico for the game’s only goal. The Panthers followed up with a 2-2 draw with UNC Wilmington to move to 2-4-1 through four weeks, a far healthier record than the 1-4-0 at which they sat coming into the weekend.

Abbey Burns has also been instrumental for her team this season, leading UAB as captain and quite literally stepping up to secure the Blazers a 1-0 win over SEC side Ole Miss. The South Australian’s 58th minute penalty was UAB’s only shot on target for the entire game, and it was absolutely unstoppable as it rocketed into the roof of the net. With Ole Miss only putting one of their own seven shots on target, Burns’ goal was enough to secure their first of two 1-0 victories for the weekend as they moved to 3-2-1 with a win over Southern Miss in their second game of the weekend.

Already a star in the Maine midfield, Lara Kirkby notched her second goal in the season after just five games, just one shy of the three she scored in 15 games last season. The 2023 Rachael Doyle Medallist’s header from a corner tied a bow on the Black Bears’ victory over Stonehill, wrapping up a 4-1 win as Maine rebounded from last week’s draw with Merrimack and loss to Rutgers, elevating their record to 3-1-2.

Graduate student Molly Arens has come off the bench in each of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s last two games, but made her case for a return to the starting lineup against Prairie View A&M. The midfielder scored the Islanders’ penultimate goal in a 5-1 drubbing of the Panthers, finding the back of the net with one of her two shots on target in 32 minutes of playing time. Arens’ first goal of the season was the fourth of her career to go along with six career assists.

Whilst Roden, Burns, Arens, and Kirkby were adding to their goal tallies, Tarleton State freshman Adelaide Wyrzynski got her own goalscoring off to a start with the insurance goal in a 2-0 win over Grambling State. It really only was a matter of time for Wyrzynski, who has rattled off three shots in three separate games, and put all three of her shots on target in 44 minutes of playing time in this game. Having shown her attacking threat throughout the early stages of her freshman campaign, it appears all but assured that the goals will continue to flow for the former Junior Matildas representative.

Madison Chambers has been in and out of the starting lineup for Alabama State this season, but made a case for more playing time as she teed up the Hornets’ only goal in a 2-1 loss to West Georgia. The Tasmanian was credited with an assist on Ariana James’ opener as part of a 28-minute outing, and in fact all bar one of her appearances this season have seen Chambers play between 22 and 28 minutes. Hopefully, the rest of the season will be more like that one other appearance, which saw the senior play 63 minutes against Talladega.

Eve Tiktikakis also chalked up her first NCAA Division I assist, and did so on debut for Charleston Southern in a 5-0 win over South Carolina State. Having notched two goals and two assists at Florida Tech in NCAA Division II last season, hopefully Tiktikakis’ debut performance, which also included a shot on target, will serve as a sign of things to come.
