Little Rock put in-state opponents Arkansas-Pine Bluff to the sword with a 7-0 win, and it was Candice Kilderry who set the Trojans on their way with the first two goals of the contest. The sophomore’s first career brace saw her open the scoring in the eighth minute, cleaning up a rebound to put her team up 1-0. The Victorian’s second goal came courtesy of a Trans-Tasman connection as Kiwi defender Serenity Thake set Kilderry up, and the midfielder made no mistake. Kilderry would finish with five shots in just 53 minutes, remaining dangerous throughout the contest. The two goals equaled Kilderry’s output from her entire freshman season as the last remaining Aussie from 2023’s group of four continues to make an impact in Little Rock.
UAB commenced conference play this week, and it was once again Abbey Burns proving instrumental as the Blazers secured a 2-1 win over UTSA. Having come back from 1-0 down courtesy of a 58th minute goal, the Blazers won an 86th minute penalty, which the South Australian promptly dispatched for what would prove to be the game-winner. It was an ideal start to conference play for the Blazers, who were tipped to finish ninth in the AAC, but opened their slate by knocking off a UTSA picked to finish one position above them.
Under 20 Women’s World Cup duties may have delayed Grace Wilson’s debut for Maine, but the goalkeeper made up for lost time with a sparkling performance against Holy Cross. The South Australian made five saves to keep a clean sheet in the Black Bears’ 1-0 win, preserving the victory after Lara Kirkby’s assist helped Maine open the scoring in just the second minute. Wilson’s performance earned them the America East Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week awards, deserved returns for an outstanding debut.
Massachusetts picked up a 1-0 win over local foes UMass-Lowell, and wouldn’t you know it, it involved Hannah Peric causing havoc in the box at a set piece! The Minutewomen captain nodded down a corner in the six-yard box for teammate Karina Groff to lash home from point blank range, handing UMass the lead in the 51st minute. With the defence, led by Peric, conceding just three shots on target for the entirety of the game, and only one after taking the lead, that one goal was enough for UMass to move to a 5-2-1 lead before launching into Atlantic 10 play against prohibitive conference favourites Saint Louis this coming week.
Annie Grove and Meg Roden faced off as UMBC took on High Point, and it was Roden finishing with bragging rights among the Canberra pair, grabbing not only the win but the second goal in the Panthers’ win. A neat finish from an acute angle put High Point 2-0 up in the 65th minute after they had taken the lead in just the second minute. With High Point’s defence conceding only one shot for the entire contest, the result was never in doubt after Roden’s goal, her second of the season and third of her college career.
Oregon State may not have picked up the win against South Dakota State, but there was still a moment to savour for Katie Godden, who tallied the assist on the goal to put the Beavers up 2-0 before the Jackrabbits rallied for a 3-2 win. Escaping challenges from two defenders, Godden was able to place a through ball in a spot where a teammate could just nudge it home in front of the onrushing goalkeeper. In addition to the assist, Godden finished with three shots on target in 59 minutes of action in what was undoubtedly her most impactful performance of the season to date.
VCU came into their game against UNC Wilmington sitting at 0-6 after running the gauntlet in non-conference action, but Greta Kraszula was not about to let her Rams enter league play without a win. Level at 0-0 approaching the hour mark, VCU opened the scoring from the spot before Kraszula’s inch-perfect free kick found Milica Bulatovic, who headed home to double the advantage. A third goal in the space of seven minutes followed, putting the game beyond doubt and giving VCU something to build on as they commence Atlantic 10 play against Davidson.
Having come off the bench in each of her previous appearances, Saint Peter’s freshman Sophie Cook was elevated to the starting lineup for the first time against Merrimack, and took full advantage of the opportunity. Although the Peacocks fell to a 3-2 defeat, Cook played all 90 minutes of the contest in what was hopefully a sign of things to come for the Newcastle product.
This week also saw a debut for Coastal Carolina freshman Tahlia Voskanian. It’s been a while coming, but the SD Raiders product and Armenian national team member came off the bench to play eight minutes in the Chanticleers’ 3-1 win over Davidson. Although it was just eight minutes, it gives Voskanian something to build on going forward.
