2024 Week 5 Preview

Recent news suggests that Fresno State and Oregon State could reside in the same conference come 2026, but this week, Shivani Battaglia and Katie Godden are set to face off in a non-conference game as both teams edge closer to league play. Battaglia’s transfer from Central Michigan has been a simply inspired move, with the Western Australian playing all 540 minutes between the sticks for Fresno State this season, keeping a pair of clean sheets and holding a save percentage of .826. Meanwhile, Godden has started on only two of five occasions this season, but has played healthy minutes in the majority of games and looked dangerous at times. If nothing else, we should hopefully see the two Australians in direct competition as Godden looks to breach Battaglia’s defences.

This week also sees a battle of stars from the national capital as High Point take on UMBC. Midfielder Meg Roden provided one of the highlights last week with a game-winning Olimpico for High Point, but fellow Canberra product, Annie Grove, will do everything in her power to shut down the Panthers’ attack. The Retrievers have already kept two clean sheets in five games this season, and their two wins are already double what they posted in 2023. Meanwhile, Roden and High Point will be looking to maintain their good form, having picked up two wins and a drawn in their last three games after starting the season with three losses.

Meanwhile, in Louisiana, Caitlin Le Roux and Northwestern State will be looking to shut down Adelaide Wyrzynski after the freshman scored her first collegiate goal for Tarleton State last week. The Demons had a tough start to the season, falling to three power conference teams as they frontloaded their non-conference schedule. However, after two confidence-boosting wins last week, things are looking up in Natchitoches. Le Roux has featured in all five games so far, coming off the bench to play varying amounts of minutes on each occasion. On the other side, Tarleton State are sitting at a healthy 4-2-3 to this point, with Wyrzynski looking increasingly dangerous in recent times. Having posted three shots in two of her last three games, the freshman has been a real impact player off the bench, banging home her first goal in last week’s 2-0 win over Grambling State.

The Demons will then host Jacquelline Kambere and Mississippi Valley State, whose first match of the weekend has unfortunately already been postponed due to the incoming Hurricane Francine. The Devilettes have played just three games to this point, but Kambere has started all three, played at least 68 minutes on every occasion, and tallied an assist in a 3-2 win over Hampton.

On the West Coast, Holly Furphy and Santa Clara welcome local rivals Stanford to Stevens Stadium in a battle of Bay Area powers separated by a distance that could be covered by a reasonably-priced Uber ride (which this writer may or may not have done). Stanford are sitting pretty atop the United Soccer Coaches rankings, taking all eight first-place votes in the most recent poll to go with their 6-0 record. However, Santa Clara sit 12th in the nation and also hold a healthy 6-1 record after their whirlwind 4-3 win over Cal Poly last week. Furphy came off the bench to rattle off two shots in her 37 minutes on the pitch, but the Victorian has started four of seven games this season, so it will be interesting to see what role she plays as West Coast Conference play moves ever closer.

Erin Gordon and Harvard will actually face Santa Clara next week, but before then, the Crimson travel to the shores of Lake Michigan (another place this writer may or may not have been) to face Milwaukee and Northwestern. Milwaukee have put themselves through the wringer with their non-conference schedule, facing three Big Ten teams as they look to battle-test themselves before their quest to retain their Horizon League crown. Don’t let the 1-5 record fool you; this Panthers team was picked to win their conference for a reason. Meanwhile, Northwestern may have been picked to finish 12th in the 18-team Big Ten, but a 5-2 record is nothing to be sneezed at. Moreover, one of those losses came in a 2-0 defeat to now-#2 ranked Virginia, a game in which the Wildcats held the Cavaliers to a single shot on target for the entire contest. Harvard are certainly more than capable of winning each of these games, but both will also be a solid test for the former Macarthur Rams defender and the Crimson.

Congratulations must also go to Gordon, whose Macarthur Rams side came up trumps in the NPL New South Wales grand final last weekend, defeating APIA Leichhardt 4-2 on penalties after the sides finished 2-2 after 90 minutes and could not be split during extra time. Former University of the Incarnate Word defender Madison McComasky captained the Rams to victory, whilst former Rhode Island goalkeeper Teresa Morrissey was the hero between the sticks in the shootout for the Rams.
