2024 NCAA Division I Week 7 Wrap

Facing two-time defending WAC regular season champions Utah Valley is not going to be easy for any team in the league this season, but Adelaide Wyrzynski showcased her talents against the Wolverines even as Tarleton State fell to a 5-2 defeat in their conference opener. The freshman, who has emerged as a real impact option off the bench, had a hand in both of the Texans’ strikes as she finished with a goal as well as her first collegiate assist.

Now with two goals this season, Wyrzynski sits equal second for goals on a Tarleton State side that certainly shares the scoring load, with the Sydneysider sharing that second spot with eight other players. Despite the loss, the Texans still sit at 6-4-3, no small feat for a team still finding its footing at Division I level.

Iona Snape has been an integral part of Siena’s lineup throughout the season, but this week saw the midfielder’s name on the scoresheet for the first time since November 2023. Down 1-0 to a Fairfield team that came in to the game sitting at 8-1, Snape beat her defender down the right before squaring the ball for a teammate to send home for the goal that turned out to secure the Saints a point in a 1-1 draw. The assist was the third of Snape’s career, and her first of the season, as the Saints moved to 5-5-1 overall and picked up their first point in MAAC play.

Oregon State came into their game against Gonzaga looking for a solid start to their WCC campaign, and Katie Godden duly delivered. Although the Beavers were assisted by a pair of own goals by the Zags, it was Godden who put the game beyond doubt. The senior earned a 52nd minute penalty, and promptly converted the resulting spot kick, somehow nutmegging the Gonzaga goalkeeper in the process. The result moved the Beavers to 3-6 overall, but more importantly, saw them start WCC play 1-0 before they take on Pacific next week, who will hopefully have Libby Davy back sooner rather than later.

We talked up the battle between Little Rock and Morehead State this week, and the match didn’t disappoint as all three Aussies were heavily involved. Candice Kilderry, Lilly Bailey, and Natasha Tanner each started for their respective sides as Little Rock picked up a 2-1 win. Morehead State went up 1-0 inside three minutes, but Kilderry tied things up as she fired the ball beyond Bailey in the 23rd minute. The Trojans would complete the comeback nine minutes after halftime to edge past the Eagles on the Ohio Valley Conference standings, with the teams sitting in 2nd and 3rd on seven and six points respectively through three games. All three Aussies played in excess of 70 minutes, as a league that has been a successful hunting ground for many Aussies over the years continues to provide a place for players to succeed.

The Atlantic 10 has also been home to a number of Aussies over the year, with one of the most successful, Hannah Peric, again proving her value to UMass. More known for her defensive prowess, the Manly United product popped up with the third goal of her college career to help the Minutewomen to a third consecutive win, scoring the game winner in a 2-1 victory. Against a team with no outfield player standing taller than 5’9, the 6’2 Peric was unstoppable at a 74th minute corner. Although the ball that was sent in may have been an Olimpico-in-waiting, Peric made absolutely sure that it found the back of the net, heading home to make absolutely sure. The Minutewomen now sit level atop the Atlantic 10 standings with nine points through four games, and although conference favourites Saint Louis have a game in hand, UMass have the points on the board at this stage.
