2024 Week 7 Preview

Ivy League play opens up with a battle between the two conference favourites, and an Australian will be right amongst it as Erin Gordon and Harvard face 2023 regular season champions Brown in their league opener. However, Brown have dropped a few results to sit 3-2-3, whilst Harvard remain undefeated at 4-0-4 following a draw away to nationally ranked Santa Clara last week. Erin Gordon has played a massive part in helping the Crimson retained that 0 in the loss column, having played all bar 24 minutes across eight games as part of a defence that has conceded just six goals to this point. In a league season that sees each team only play seven games, a win in this game will swing the momentum massively in the prevailing team’s favour.

Meanwhile, in the Ohio Valley Conference, a battle of in-form Aussies awaits as Little Rock take on Morehead State. Both teams had a successful opening weekend of league play, with Morehead State particularly impressive in dispatching of Eastern Illinois 5-1. Freshman Lilly Bailey made three saves in that game, but has been in outstanding form over the last few games, whilst sophomore defender Natasha Tanner has forced her way into the starting lineup of late. On the other side, however, will be Candice Kilderry. Not only has the sophomore scored three goals over the last two weeks, she also picked up the most recent Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts filling in as part of the backline for the Trojans. Hopefully, this game sees Kilderry move back to a more advanced position and a more direct battle between the Victorian and the Eagles’ Western Australian duo.

Mercedes McNabb is also in elite goalscoring form, banging home a hat-trick in UNC Asheville’s 7-2 win over South Carolina State, and the timing couldn’t have been better as the star freshman and fellow Aussie, Jasmine Barry, take on Eve Tiktikakis and Charleston Southern to open Big South play. UNC Asheville were tipped to finish sixth in the league this year, whilst Charleston Southern were picked to finish fourth, and it certainly has been the Buccaneers with the superior non-conference record. Tiktikakis made her third appearance of the season in a midweek win over Winthrop, and hopefully a fourth comes in this game as Charleston Southern look to shut down McNabb and the UNC Asheville attack.

Both Incarnate Word and Northwestern State are sitting at or just above .500 as Montanna Mathews and Caitlin Le Roux prepare to face off in Southland Conference play. Northwestern State were once the dominant force in the league, and will be hungry to return to that level after being supplanted by Lamar in recent years, although the Demons have been picked to finish fourth in the league in 2024. Incarnate Word, on the other hand, will be looking to make a mockery of the preseason rankings after being tabbed to finish 10th in the 11-team league. The Cardinals certainly have a far better non-conference record than many teams picked to finish above them; the challenge now is to turn that non-conference form into a solid league record, and that starts with this weekend’s games. With Mathews starting in five of her seven appearances for UIW this year, and Le Roux coming off the bench for Northwestern State in all eight games, we should see the Aussies on both sides get playing time in this one.

A-SUN play is already in its second week, and both Teagan Douglas’ Bellarmine outfit and Camila Madriz Figueroa’s Stetson side find themselves slightly behind the eight-ball after the opening weekend’s results. However, despite falling to two defeats, Stetson’s non-conference record of 5-3 should at least give them confidence that they know how to get the job done. However, Bellarmine are still looking for their first win, with four of their six losses coming by a single goal alongside two draws. However, one shining light for the Knights has been Teagan Douglas, who remains a crucial part of the starting eleven. The sophomore has played all bar six minutes of the season to this point, picking up exactly where she left off in 2023. On the other side, we are still yet to see Camila Madriz Figueroa take to the pitch for Stetson, but each day is one day closer to the Venezuelan Under 20s national team representative making her collegiate debut.

Katie Godden has chipped in an assist for Oregon State in each of the last two games, and this upturn in form could not have come at a better time as the Beavers open their West Coast Conference campaign against defending champions Gonzaga. Although the Zags have been tipped to finish fifth in the league this year, they remain a tough opponent. Oregon State, on the other hand, have been picked to finish eighth in the 11-team league. Despite this, hosting a team tipped to finish just above them is an ideal opportunity to pick up a win that could flip the script in terms of their season projections.
