2024 Week 10 Preview

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s long unbeaten streak was harshly snapped by Stephen F. Austin, but the Islanders remain in decent shape in the Southland Conference. However, Molly Arens and Emma Bates will have to fend off challenges from two other Australians if they are to maintain their position in the conference tournament positions heading into the final couple of weeks. First up: Caitlin Le Roux and Northwestern State, who sit two points clear of the Islanders in fourth position, but with one more game under their belt. Things only get tastier in the second game of the weekend as the Aussie pairing take on Montanna Mathews and Incarnate Word, who have only a single point buffer over the Islanders. Although the remainder of the season schedule shakes out fairly favourably for all three of these teams, particularly in terms of the chasing pack’s remaining games, any win this weekend would see a team breathing a lot more easily with regards to conference tournament qualification.

Eve Tiktikakis’ Charleston Southern and Meg Roden’s High Point sit level atop the Big South standings, but things could not be tighter as they are but two of four teams currently on seven points midway through the league schedule. Charleston Southern have a game in hand on the remaining trio, but that will mean far less if High Point grab the win on the road in the penultimate weekend. Hopefully, this weekend sees Eve Tiktikakis granted more playing time than we have seen in recent weeks, whilst Meg Roden continues to be influential for the Panthers, whether off the bench or in the starting lineup. Interestingly, looking ahead, Mercedes McNabb and Jasmine Barry could also be highly influential to this race, as their UNC Asheville outfit plays three of the top four in the last couple of weeks, including both Charleston Southern and High Point in their final two games of the regular season.

It’s rare that a team without Aussies is a focal point for any part of College Matildas, but in a way, Lindenwood are exactly that this week as they take on both Morehead State and Little Rock this week, with both Aussie-laden teams chasing the Lions for top spot in the Ohio Valley Conference. Candice Kilderry has been at her best throughout the campaign for Little Rock, and the sophomore may have to be again as Lindenwood have conceded just one goal in six conference games to this point. Kilderry, with six goals to her name this season, is undoubtedly the Trojan’s biggest attacking threat, with her tally doubling the team’s next best. Meanwhile, Morehead State duo Natasha Tanner and Lilly Bailey will be tasked with shutting down Lindenwood’s attack. Fortunately, in Bailey, the Eagles have a goalkeeper who sits third in the conference for save percentage as part of a team that sits second in the league for goals against average. With just three games remaining in the league schedule, this could turn out to be the weekend that decides just about everything in the OVC, and Little Rock are a red-hot chance of scooping the regular season crown and hosting rights for the conference tournament.

Eloise Jones saw her first minutes since August 21 in Rider’s midweek defeat to Iona, and hopefully the defender can add to that as the Broncs face Iona Snape and Siena this weekend. With just three or four games remaining for each team in the Metro Atlantic, the stakes are high in this one for vastly differing reasons. For Siena, winning out will be their best chance of maintaining their spot in the top four and securing a home quarter-final. Meanwhile, Rider are just about in must-win territory if they are to reach the conference tournament. Although the Broncs have a game in hand, they sit five points out of the tournament spots at this stage. However, their last three games come against teams in the bottom half of the table, so if they are good enough, the opportunities are there to pick up points. A win in this one would be a very nice bonus though. Iona Snape picked up her second assist of the season in Siena’s midweek win over Manhattan, so expect to see the midfielder heavily involved for the Saints once again.

Pacific may be at the foot of the table in the West Coast Conference, but they can still be nuisance value in a match against Holly Furphy and Santa Clara as we continue to await the return of Libby Davy from a concussion sustained against Weber State. Furphy scored two goals in the Broncos’ 3-0 win over Portland a couple of weeks ago, but still saw only a quarter-hour or so off the bench in each of the last two contests. Hopefully that changes this week, with the Broncos simply required to just keep winning to maintain pace with league leaders Oregon State. At this stage, winning isn’t just about keeping pace with the Beavers, though; the Broncos can’t afford a résumé-hurting loss that could skewer their at-large bid chances.
