2024 Week 2 Wrap

Abbey Burns hit the scoresheet in Week 1 with a penalty against Louisville, but her performance against Samford this week really turned heads. A double from the midfielder, including an Olimpico to tie the score at 1-1, helped UAB secure a point in a thrilling 3-3 draw that saw the Blazers go down 3-2 in the 84th minute before scoring less than 40 seconds later. Having been named captain this season, Burns is certainly leading by example for the Blazers, receiving an American Athletic Conference Honourable Mention for her efforts this week.

Fellow South Australian, Lara Kirkby is also enjoying an outstanding start to the season. Having scored in each of Maine’s first two games of the season, the midfielder turned provider as the Black Bears picked up a 1-0 win over Rhode Island to remain undefeated through three games. Kirkby’s pass to find Jordane Pinette in the 16th minute was absolutely pinpoint, and the Canadian made no mistake. Kirkby was also dangerous in front of goal even without scoring, putting two of her three shots on target in a 90-minute outing.

Western Australian goalkeeper Shivani Battaglia continues to enjoy an outstanding start to her time at Fresno State, having now conceded only one goal through three games and sitting in the top 50 in the nation for save percentage. The goalkeeper’s efforts were absolutely crucial as the Bulldogs maintained an unbeaten record, sitting at 2-0-1 after two weeks. Battaglia made five saves in a 2-1 win over Weber State, whilst her two saves were crucial to the Bulldogs coming away with a 0-0 draw against UC Santa Barbara as each team finished with just two shots on target. Whilst transferring can sometimes be an uncertain process, Battaglia appears to have found an ideal spot at Fresno State.

Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the country, one of the moments of the season has already occurred in New Jersey. Sarah Mitchell, who was an occasional starter for Seton Hall in 2022 but missed the entire 2023 season due to injury, made her return for the Pirates with 25 minutes off the bench in a 1-0 win over Rider. With sister, Grace, also missing the 2023 season due to injury, hopefully we aren’t too far off seeing the Scotland Under 19 representative duo back causing havoc for opposition teams in midfield again.

Finally, Harvard kicked off their season this week with a 1-0 win over Marshall, with Erin Gordon featuring for the full 90 minutes on debut. The defender helped hold Marshall to just four shots for the entire match, playing alongside Canadian Olympic squad member Jade Rose as the highly-rated Crimson started their season in perfect fashion.
