Coming into the season, the in-state rivalry battle between Harvard and Massachusetts looked as though it may be the present taking on the future for College Matildas. However, following Erin Gordon’s 90-minute outing on debut for the Crimson, the future is now as the former Macarthur Rams defender takes on fellow NPL New South Wales product, UMass senior and former Manly United defender Hannah Peric. Massachusetts are fresh off what could be considered a sizeable upset win over Rutgers, whilst Harvard knocked off Marshall in their season opener last week. Of course, with both Australians playing in defensive positions, a 0-0 draw wouldn’t be the worst result, but perhaps either Gordon or Peric (or both!) can come up with a goal.
Meanwhile, the Aussie v Aussie matchups continue in the state of Kentucky, as Morehead State head to Bellarmine. Whilst Lilly Bailey started the opening game between the sticks for the Eagles, the freshman hasn’t seen the pitch since being forced off early in that debut, and hopefully her return comes sooner rather than later. Meanwhile, Natasha Tanner has seen minutes here and there off the bench, and hopefully that playing time increases as the season progresses. At the other end, Teagan Douglas has been just about ever-present for Bellarmine this season, and has started all 20 games of her college career to this date. The Knights have had a wild season to this point, falling to a 7-0 defeat to Louisville before defeating NCAA Division III outfit Asbury 8-0. Morehead State have had far closer games, with a 2-0 loss to Kentucky the only game decided by multiple goals as they sit 2-1-1 through four games.
Moving south to Conway, South Carolina, Tahlia Voskanian will hope a college debut is in the offing as Coastal Carolina host a UAB side led by Abbey Burns, who has played a real captain’s knock so far this season. The Blazers currently sit 1-1-1, with Burns scoring three of the team’s four goals to this point, including two in a 3-3 draw with Samford last week. Coastal Carolina, on the other hand, drew with Richmond on opening day but have since fallen to two losses, although one of those was to nationally ranked Auburn. Nonetheless, they will be looking to get a win on the board soon as they attempt to build towards conference play.
Hannah Peric and UMass picked up a win over Rutgers last week, and now Lara Kirkby and Maine will look to do the same. Given their performances last season, the Black Bears have every reason to believe they can compete against power conference opponents, and this is a game that will tell them a lot about just where they stand in 2024. Already with two goals and an assist under her belt this season, Kirkby will once again be instrumental for Maine as the midfielder juggles a weekend of games with catching teammate and fellow South Australian, Grace Wilson, compete for the Young Matildas at the FIFA Under 20 Women’s World Cup.
