Denver remains undefeated through five games, and Isabella Chidiac is a big reason why as they head southwest to take on Arizona and Arizona State this week. The Pioneers sit 2-0-3 at this stage, and this pair of opponents will provide a solid test. Arizona sit at 3-2 to this point, with their two losses coming to former Pac-12 rivals Stanford and Cal, with Stanford currently sitting top of the coaches’ poll. Meanwhile, Arizona State are doing even better at 4-0-1, with a draw against Texas their only slip-up to this point. However, Denver have the knowledge that they were well on their way to a win against Texas A&M before lightning intervened and ruled that game a no-contest, so facing a couple of Power 4 opponents shouldn’t perturb them at all. Chidiac currently leads both Denver and all Aussies in NCAA Division I with three assists, with her average of 0.6 per game leaving her just outside the top 50 in the nation. The senior has already eclipsed her minutes total of 254 from 2024, having already logged 322 minutes this season. It’s taken a while, but Chidiac has bided her time and developed into an integral member of this Pioneers lineup.
Kate Ryan is another player whose minutes have exploded in recent times, to an even greater degree than Chidiac’s. After playing a grand total of 34 minutes across her first two seasons, the Dartmouth defender has played all bar 19 minutes of the 2025 campaign, starting the last two games as the Big Green compiled a 2-0-1 record prior to this week’s trip to the west coast. They will face two teams picked to finish at opposite ends of the West Coast Conference this year; top pick Santa Clara, and a San Francisco side tipped to finish 11th in the 12 team league. However, the WCC is an elite league, and even San Francisco have knocked off a nationally ranked team this year, defeating Texas Tech on August 24. Meanwhile, Santa Clara sit 2-3 after playing a schedule featuring four power conference sides, a slate against which more than a few teams would go 0-5 without anyone raising an eyebrow. This pair of games should provide an excellent test for both Ryan and the Dartmouth side in general as they ramp up preparations for their first Ivy League game on September 20, which will come against Erin Gordon and Harvard.
Meg Roden and Providence picked up a midweek win over Sacred Heart, finishing with 21 shots to 1 in a 1-0 victory, and will look to take that momentum into this weekend’s game as they host former Big East rivals Rutgers. Now sitting at 3-1, the Friars have conceded just three goals in four games and look to be building success from the back first. That may well stand them in good stead against a Rutgers side that started the season with five goals in their first two games, but has played out two 0-0 draws in their most recent contests. However, Roden will be looking to find the back of the net after scoring four times in her two seasons with High Point. In any event, the Canberra product’s 286 minutes in four games to this point appears to bode very well for her prospects at Providence, and hopefully the goals and assists are quick to follow.
Meanwhile, there are a few Aussie v Aussie matchups that could happen, some of which would require a player to make their collegiate debut, making for twice the anticipation! Fresno State will face Cal State Bakersfield, and whilst Shivani Battaglia is entrenched between the sticks for the Bulldogs, Georgia Martell is yet to make her Roadrunners debut. What better occasion than an Aussie goalkeeper battle? Meanwhile, Lilly Bailey and Hofstra face Loyola Maryland’s duo of Ava Blizzard and Eva McGorian. Bailey has already locked down the goalkeeping spot for the Pride, and who wouldn’t love to see sophomore forward Blizzard pop up for the Greyhounds and fire a few shots at her fellow Australian. Meanwhile, McGorian is more likely to be deployed further from the goal than Blizzard if she does make her first appearance, and hopefully it arrives this week.
Meanwhile, Rider take on Quinnipiac as we hope for Stella Tosoni to make her first career appearance, but also for Eloise Jones to hit the pitch for Rider for the first time this season. Unfortunately, it looks as though Cara Harris will be out for the Broncs for the foreseeable future, after being forced off early against Seton Hall in her debut. These two teams have combined for just one win this season, a victory for Rider over Delaware State, so both teams will be itching to get one here. Perhaps the addition of an Aussie to the lineup will be just the tonic…
