In danger of dropping off the pace in the fight for an American Conference tournament spot after a loss to Tulsa, UAB needed a big performance from one of their stars, and captain Abbey Burns duly delivered in a 5-2 win over East Carolina. The South Australian had a chance to put her team up 3-0 before halftime but had a penalty saved to leave the score 2-0 at the break. East Carolina pulled one back in the 67th minute, but that only appeared to strengthen Burns’ desire to atone for her miss from the spot. The Blazers’ skipper posted an assist to help put her team up 3-1 with 15 minutes to play, and then once the Pirates hit back again, delivered the final hammer blow with her second assist of the game to round out the 5-2 win in the 88th minute. Now sitting on five assists for the campaign, Burns is creeping up on Isabella Chidiac and now sits outright second among Aussies in NCAA Division I for that category.
On the topic of Isabella Chidiac, Denver played just the one game this week, but that was more than enough time for the midfielder to notch yet another assist as the Pioneers picked up a 1-0 win over South Dakota State. The senior’s 21st minute corner was initially dealt with by the goalkeeper, but Lilly Lund found the back of the net after it was played back in, delivering Chidiac the second assist on the goal. A seventh assist for the campaign Chidiac into sixth all-time for most assists in a season by an Australian in NCAA Division I, alongside luminaries including Anastasia McCleary (Alabama State), Jess Coates (Nicholls State), Harriet Withers (Murray State), and Molly Arens (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi), and level for 17th in the nation this season. The win keeps Denver in the top two spots in the Summit League after Oral Roberts picked up four points from a possible six to sit one point clear atop the conference. With no team having more than four games left to play, the Pioneers are just about already in the conference tournament, but they will be pushing to secure a first-round bye in the six-team event as well as the hosting rights that come with the regular season title.
Izzy Stein posted her third assist of the campaign this week as Long Island continue their push for a conference tournament spot in the extremely tight Northeast Conference. An incisive run from the Manly United product culminated in a smart lofted pass across the top of the box to find teammate Grace Hennig, whose touch was heavy, but a quick recovery allowed the senior to just touch the ball home, putting the Sharks up 2-1 with just over half an hour to play. An 18-4 shot count perhaps suggested that Long Island should have extended their lead, but three points is three points, and two goals proved to be enough to secure the win. The result sees LIU sit just one point off the lead in the Northeast Conference, and with all of their remaining games coming against the rest of the top five, banking early points has been an absolute godsend for the Sharks. With only four teams qualifying for the conference tournament, the last few weeks will be absolutely off the chain, and LIU are right amongst it.
Incarnate Word couldn’t quite get a win over Houston Christian that would have solidified their spot in the Southland Conference tournament spots, but nonetheless, Montanna Mathews had yet another personal highlight in what has been an outstanding season for the sophomore. The fullback notched her third assist of the season on the Cardinals’ equaliser shortly before halftime, but unfortunately Houston Christian came out firing after the break to score the eventual winner just 90 seconds into the second half. However, UIW remain two points clear of the chasing pack for the final spot in the eight-team conference tournament with three games to play. Two of those games come against top teams Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin, before their final game against 10th-placed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Meanwhile, Eloise Jones’ recent uptick in minutes for Rider has certainly been noteworthy. The defender missed all of 2022 due to injury, and then featured just five times across 2023 and 2024, playing a total of 47 minutes. However, an increase in playing time has seen the Central Coast Mariners Academy product play 95 minutes across the Broncs’ last two games, including 45 minutes in a 2-2 draw with Iona and 50 more in a 0-0 draw with Manhattan. It may have been a long time coming, but it certainly is very pleasing to see a player who has had to bide their time for so long finally being rewarded.
