Spring 2021 Week 11 Preview

The defending champion has never missed the NCAA Tournament in the following season, but that is the unwanted record staring Amy Sayer and Stanford in the face this week if they are unable to secure a result against local rivals California. Stanford had won the previous four meetings between the two teams prior to this season, but the Golden Bears marched into Stanford earlier this season and came away with a 1-0 victory. Stanford looked as though they would massively improve their NCAA Tournament chances last week before squandering a 1-0 lead against UCLA, but with Sayer back in the lineup following Matildas duty, they have one final chance to pick up a much-needed victory. Will it be enough to sneak into the NCAA Tournament? It’s a longshot, but anything can happen in football.

Moving south to Phoenix, Sandra Hill and Grand Canyon host the WAC Tournament this week, and are already through to the semi-finals after a 5-2 demolition of Chicago State in the opening round. Now, the third-seeded Lopes face #2 seed Utah Valley, a team they have already played twice on the very same pitch on which they will play this game. In the opening weekend of conference play, the teams traded 1-0 victories, with both games as close on the stat sheet as they were on the scoreboard. Should Grand Canyon get up, they will face either #5 seed New Mexico State, or #1 seed Seattle, who are without the nation’s leading scorer, Sydney Carr, due to COVID-19 contact tracing.

Missouri isn’t exactly close to the Atlantic, but that will be the location for the Atlantic 10 Tournament after Saint Louis rode roughshod over the competition in the regular season. However, there are three other teams involved that will be looking to spring an upset, and one of those is Hannah Peric’s Massachusetts side. As a division winner, the Minutewomen will avoid Saint Louis in the semi-finals, instead facing South division champions Davidson whilst Saint Louis play wildcard side Dayton. Of course, with Atlantic 10 regular season play split into divisions, with no cross-division play, there are no past results between any of the teams to help provide insight as to who the favourites are between Massachusetts and Davidson. However, Peric is already a winner this week, having picked up a conference All-Rookie selection following an outstanding season to this point.

From the Atlantic 10 playing in the Midwest to Midwestern teams playing within a stone’s throw of the Atlantic, Claire Farrington’s Butler and Renee Pountney’s Creighton head to Providence, Rhode Island for the Big East Tournament this weekend. Butler come into the tournament as the #1 seed from the Midwest division and have the second-best record of all teams in the competition at 6-1. The Bulldogs will face UConn, whose women’s soccer team perhaps isn’t as formidable as their women’s basketball team, but at 6-2-1 will provide a stern test for Farrington and her teammates. Meanwhile, Pountney and Creighton take their 4-4 record into a battle with national powerhouse Georgetown. The Bluejays just snuck into the tournament, and a win against the Hoyas would be considered an upset. However, there are no easy games come tournament time, particularly in one with just four teams, and it wouldn’t be a massive surprise to see Pountney and Farrington face off for the Big East title (and some Northern NSW bragging rights) come the end of the week.
