It wasn’t the best final week of the regular season for the Aussies in NCAA Division I, with no teams managing to join Alabama State as conference tournament champions, leaving numbers quite sparse for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Claire Farrington’s Butler side went closest, taking Georgetown to overtime in the Big East championship game before falling 2-1, with Farrington playing cameos off the bench in both the semi-final win over UConn and the loss to Georgetown. Meanwhile, Kiarnie Latham, Hannah Peric, Grace Watson Carr, Sandra Hill, and Renee Pountney all saw their hopes evaporate at the semi-final stage, with differing levels of involvement for the Aussies.
Meanwhile, at NAIA level, Emma Farrelly remains the sole Aussie in the hunt for a national title as William Carey marched into the final 10-team national championship bracket. The Crusaders dismantled LSU Shreveport 3-0 and Cumberland 5-1 in their opening round matches on their home patch, with Farrelly coming off the bench in both games.
Of course, with the regular season now complete, we move on to the NCAA Tournament, for which the teams will be announced tomorrow. Grace Norbury, Sophie Bui, and Alabama State secured their berth by virtue of winning the SWAC Tournament, whilst Talia Grossman and USC are considered a lock to earn an at-large bid to the reduced 48 team bracket.
The remainder of the teams thought to be in with even a remote shot are Hofstra, Washington State, and Stanford. A loss to Elon in the CAA Tournament semi-finals leaves Grace Watson Carr and Hofstra likely on the outside looking in, their RPI having dropped significantly after sitting in the top 15 prior to that game, and with few high-quality wins to their name. Meanwhile, Washington State’s draw against Washington could be viewed as a good result, but it definitely wasn’t the blockbuster win Aly Hay’s side needed to push themselves into solid contention for a tournament spot. Finally, Amy Sayer and Stanford managed to scrape an overtime win against local rivals California on the weekend, but it also appears that they may be on the outer with the committee at this stage.
